| Give me the exact model and all the info you can and I'll look it up in a Winchester special edition collectors book I have and see just what was produced with what options or materials or whatever. Give me the year if possible. If you're unsure on the year, go to this link and put your serial # in and then let me/us know. Winchester Manufacture Dates

| Do you mean shiny blued like a fancy shot gun or Dulite blued, like WWII firearms? |

| LET ME TRY AGAIN let me try again......i have a m1 carbine winchester mfg. ser number is 5788006. this gun has a blue or black finish...some people have told me its correct others make fun of me....could this gun have a dulite finish or has someone blued it? stock is in good condition with some markings on it...im not a student of these guns ...i know more about more modern weapons. if it is blued is it worth parkerizing or should i take my losses and pass it on to someone else? i think i gave $425 for it several years ago....there are no import marks on it |

| This does not sound good in terms of the original finish but, as someone else pointed out, Winchester produced a massive amount of firearms and having some of them made in a special run for presentation guns is not unknown. It could be you have a sort of factory rare gun. I advise pictures at every possible ange with every number or symbol or letter in the metal and the wood shown as some of the forum members do have a great deal of historical material on hand. Perhaps they will have the answer. Last edited by nathangdad; 07-02-2008 at 04:00 AM. |

| Ok...Here goes. Winchester did NOT parkerize all of its M1 Carbines. Many thousands were Dulited. Dulite is a blue/black finish that has a semi-gloss to it and closely resembles bluing. It appears like a flat finish dark blue job. If it is a bright shiney blue rather than a sort of flat blue, then it has been blued. If it is a duller finish, then it is Dulited. Most of the Dulite finished carbines are lower serial number Winchester, but not all. So the question is, is it really blued, or is it Dulite? And Guys, Inlands also had "blued" finishes on early guns. In fact many of the receivers are actually two-toned blue with the darker finish on top and a lighter bluing on the lower part of the receiver. So don't just say a blued carbine has been refinished. Look at what it is first. It just may be right.

| Winchester used far more Dulite finish than Inland. I've seen many examples. Try looking up that info in "war Baby". It tells a lot about those finishes. Try asking BrianQ about Dulite finishes on Jouster. He can tell you more than I can. It has also been discussed in articles in the Carbine Club newsletters. There are plenty of sources of information of these finishes.

| Re-bluing does not ruin the carbine. It may de-value it on the collector's market some however. If you paid $425 for it, you made a pretty good deal I'd say. Heck, Universals and Iver Johnsons are going for that now days. Did you get as a shooter or as a collector? If you got it as a shooter, why worry about what your friends say...a little ribbing is always going to happen, even if your carbine is correct. Enjoy the little guy. |

| Just shoot it and enjoy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks?
