Not much..I'm working on various loads but haven't gotton to chrono anything yet.
I've loaded mostly Sierra 45 grain Hornet which I like real well but have also been working with Hornady's 35 grain VMax which has absolutely zero loading data. If I can't get my friends chronograph I will need to purchase one...that will take some saving up...lol
I have fired the 35 gr vmax and it feeds very well, I was somewhat concerned the flex tip on the vmax may not feed well or get crushed during feeding...it did fine.

Hi .
Just found this forum while searching for info on the 5.7 Johnson.
I had just dug out a couple of my Carbines a few weeks ago that i hadn't shot in years.
After shooting them a bit , i started remembering something about some 22 cal conversions from a long time ago.
Oldjarhead . wondering how your rifle is shooting .
Real serious about converting one of my carbines to 5.7 . or even trying to buy one.
Talking to a shooting buddy of mine, he said he might know of someone that has one of the IAI's in 5.7 for sale .
Anybody know if those conversions were any good or not. and if so , anybody know what one of the original IAI carbines might be worth?
If that doesn't work out , i will be back here looking for some info on how to go about converting one of my rifles to 5.7 .
thanks
Joe

Joe | I am still happy with mine and have pretty much gotten the reloading problem handled but still no chronograph time.
I don't know much about IAI's weaponry so can't really give you any info.
Converting your own carbine is fairly easy except for finish reaming...that's tedious. Numrich still has barrels for the 5.7mm but have raised the price about $10. Completion ofthe project gives a really good feeling of accomplishment for someone who has never done a project such as this.
Factory made 5.7mm carbines were Universal, Plainfield, and IAI. The latter two are difficult to find and the former was made by a good company that had a bad reputation for quality issues. I don't think the 5.7mm was really accepted as the market wasn't ready for such a cartridge. Then the .222 and .223 Rem came out and overshadowed the little guy.
At this point, the only manufacturer of 5.7mm ammo is PCI which is available through Graff and Sons.
Keep in touch and let me know how things are going.
BTW, where are you? PM me if you don't want to post your location.

Joe | Yes...I wish I had kept the ones I owned in the 90's...they would have given me a complete collection...lol
I love these little shooters, even with their supposed limitations.
I am currently building a "truck" gun from a barreled receiver group I purchased from the CMP. I had to rebarrel the receiver as the attached barrel bore was rusted so bad.
It's alot of fun, self-serving, and self-gratifying.

I might decide to go ahead and buy a barrel for my rifle.
Would you be interested in sharing some info on how you went about finishing the chamber on yours.
Also curious , as to how hard it was to take off the original barrel from your reciever.
thanks
Joe.

Joe. | I'll help any way I can.
Barrel removal...depends...some are easy to come off some are not. You will need a barrel vise and a receiver wrench.
I will pm you tomorrow.

Joe | I got the reamer from Numrich as well as the barrel. I don't believe they have them anymore.
There doesn't seem to be any head-space gauges around so I head-spaced on a dummy round.
Let me know when you get the barrel and before you are ready to do your conversion.
I meant to pm you but had a brain-fart and forgot what I was going to tell you...sorry.

Did you ever get to chronograph any of your loads yet?
Do you have any info on what velocities you are expecting to get out of your loads.
thanks
Joe

Joe | No, no chrono yet...having a hard time fitting it into my budget at the moment. I have a friend who has one that I may be able to use...if he can find it. lol
I'm trying for about 3000fps with a 45gr Hornet bullet. I don't think the rifling in a carbine will sustain much more than that. I do have some 35gr VMax that work very well and may even be a little higher velocity.
Maybe Santa will bring me a chronograph <grin>.

oldjarhead .
Do you have any idea about how "short" the chamber actually was on the 5.7 barrel you bought?
Was it maybe a few thousandths , or more like .050" s short.
thanks
Joe

Joe | I really don't know but would guess about .020-.025. It was so minute it made me wonder why I had to buy a finish reamer...I know why but just the feeling.

oldjarhead....
Well , i went ahead and ordered a set of RCBS loading dies , and a Redding case form die......
That was probably more money than i spent on my last 4 or 5 sets of dies combined..............
Hoping that they show up about the same time the barreled action does....
Do you , or anyone else for that matter , know of a source for parts for the carbine , other than Gun Parts?
I have to use this kit with one of my carbines , but thought a little bit at a time , i could buy a bolt , slide , etc and make a complete rifle out of it .
thanks
Joe.

Joe. | Fulton Armory is a reasonable place for parts although I find the Numrich is less expensive in most cases. Both are quite viable and I've done business with both. In fact I just finished building up a carbine on my CMP barreled receiver and purchased the trigger group and slide from Numrich along with some other parts...like new and a tight fit.
Get the stuff you need as soon as you can, carbine parts prices are creeping up in cost.
I recommend that you take the needed parts from one of your carbines and try them in the barreled action just to ensure fit...then order what you need. I don't know much about the IAI carbines.
Oh, Riverbank Armory also sells carbine parts but at a premium...I guess their stuff is gold plated. Never bought from them and doubt that I ever will.
Yeah, the dies for this little beast ain't cheap. I can probably spare a few formed cases if needed.
You are going to like this shooter...!

Looking for a scope mount for my carbine
Anybody know of any good mounts , other than the foward mount i have seen ?
I have seen a couple of aluminum mounts that attach to the rear sight cutout, but the "reviews" on those are not very good.
I actually have one of the rear sight type mounts on one of my rifles, but it is an
all steel mount , and i have no idea where i got it ...........
Guess i should have bougth a couple more of them back in the 80's-90's , when i bought my $150 carbines.............
thanks
Joe
