Be sure you have the M2 style magazine catch before you use the 30 rounder.

| The M2 catch has a 1/4 inch protrusion on the left side to give added support to the larger magazine. This protrusion points toward the muzzle. The original catch was designed for the light 15 round magazine but will not provide the needed support for the 30 rounder. Look at the magazine release on you carbine. If it has that protrusion, you're good to go. If not you may have problems with the larger magazine. On the left side of your 30 rounder, you will notice a tit extruding from the left side. The protrusion on the mag catch fits under the tit and provides adequate support. The mag catch will run about $15 and is easily installed.

Oh, no, I have the original type. But I haven't had any problems with my two 30 rd mags feeding at all -- I read somewhere that the mag catch was designed to keep the mag steady during automatic fire on an M2 or M3 carbine, not semi auto fire on an M1.

And you are right, it was designed for use on the M2 with the 30 round mags. It's just a thought.

So, does anybody make a light or laser that attaches to the bayonet lug of an M1 carbine? Seems like that would be a natural accessory. A Surefire G2 light in a bracket that snaps on the bayo lug? I'd buy one!

There are a lot of Japs that you cant ask if the .30 Carbine is enough power. They is dead. And dead is dead. If its good enough for a Marine going into battle on Okinawa its good enough for me.

But of course, then where would you attach the bayonet?

| Good point! I'd rather have a 15 round carbine than a 8 round M1 when crawling through a dark tunnel!

New ammo has greatly improved the M1 Carbine. The new ammo takes the M1 30. Cal. far beyond any .357 pistol and the new Corbon DPX with Barnes bullet adds expandability to penetration that meets the new FBI test for ammo. I would have no issues using my Carbine within defensive distances even when the SHTF. Shot aquisition for 2, 3rd. and 4th rounds is almost instant.

| Forty years ago I saw NVA who were hit with 1 or 2 carbine rounds in an an encounter with ARVN forces. They were as dead. They would not have been any deader if hit by M16, M14, or even 30-06 from a Garand. As noted, the carbine has it's place, but within it's design parameters it will kill with no problem.

You can trim the back end of the follower(top) to 90 degree just like the 30 rds follower and it will hold the bolt open when you shoot the last round. The 15 rds mag follower has the 45 degree angle. Take a look and you will see the difference. I trimmed the 45 degree to a 90 degree and it held the bolt open after the last round was fired. Good luck. I carried an M1 30 Carbine when I was in Cambodia back in 1963 and a Colt .380 Government model.

My wife used an M1 Carbine both for a fun gun and home defense for a while. Here's some info on .30 Carbine defensive ammo and using the M1 Carbine with a light and such. www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19956 DocGKR seems like he knows his business and he's well respected in some circles for his work. Hope this helps. |

I like the fact that with my carbine, I have a 15rd. mag in the rifle, a pouch on the stock with two more 15rd. mags, and a belt pouch on the sling with two more 15rd. mags. I can grab that puppy and head out the door with 70 rounds, ready to go.

Like all you guys Can't remember all the times someone asked what to get for a defensive weapon, and I told them a M1 Carbine, always get an argument that a shotgun is more effective and you can't miss, but even 18 inch barrels don't spread much at 25 ft. If you fire a short barrel 12 ga in a dark room, you won't be able to see for a second shot for way longer than you will have, use the carbine and shoot twice. I would personally never load a defense weapon with anything other than FMJ round nose, several reasons, if you need to shoot him you need to kill him, not create ugly wounds and grounds for a lawsuit, and you can only kill by penentrating vital organs. Also, use of JHP will tend to get prosecutors to think in terms of "intent to create great bodily harm" and "lying in wait" rather than "legitimate self defense" |

See Steve all of my guns are for hunting, hence the hollow points. If by chance my home invader gets shot with my wild boar gun ....well that is just his bad luck. I'll take my chances with stopping power vs penetration any day!

Hollowpoints make sense for defense loads. Very few , if any LE agencies use FMJ anymore -- too dangerous for bystanders. Most M1 Carbine loads have more penetration than is really needed. Also check the other threads on police loads for both handguns & long guns. www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19956 The defense AR middy Carbines at our house are loaded with 75 gn HPM , which runs about 12 1/2 to 13 inches in gel -- less than almost all .30 M1 Carbine loads. |

gbear-48 If I was a policeman, or lived in a multiple unit building, I would use JHP loads too, but if your concern is defending a home you need to learn to think like a soldier. The job is to keep you and your family alive, not to arrest some evildoer. |

Years ago I had a Thompson 1928A1 semi-auto carbine, I know that I would not like to be on the receiving end of that thing and would be thinking twice about my options if I saw it in someone's hands. Has anyone here considered the modern Auto Ordnance version??
