| Bavarian carbines
CMP has these starting Oct 1. Anyone know anything about these? They're only slightly more expensive, presumably because of rarity, but is quality comparable to equivalent service/rack grades?

I have my order form filled out and will give a full report when it comes in! I received a Service Grade M1 recently from the CMP and was very pleased. I doubt you will be disappointed with what they send you!

I received a service grade Underwood from CMP that had a really beat up, dried-out stock... wasn't too pleased about that, but after some sanding and some quick staining (then Linseed oil of course), it looks brand new! The action has spot rust, but what do you expect.

I'm mailing my order for a service grade Baravrian Carbine on Sep 29th, since they won't accept orders before the first of October. I was going to order a service grade carbine anyway, so I might as well get a special one.

I think I have one of this designation already. According to a check of the markings on my M1 Carbine. I function fired it only, perfect, Korean 15 and 30 round magazines. Next range outing I will adjust the sights, it shoots a little to the right. Very neat little Carbine, reading the various comments all over, on the HP/SP/Hard Ball effectiveness in the lethality dept; it seems to me, and I could be wrong (I might have been maybe once B/4!) putting two rounds center mass, with Mil; Spec; Hard Ball, would be lights out! From up close and personal, to 100m. And having the added advantage of going through sheet metal quite handily also, if required. |

The CMP site has tons of very good info about the Bavarian/Austrian Carbines. The info is hidden away and I can't get a direct link to work. Here's how to find the good stuff: www.thecmp.org Click on M1 Carbine under Rifle sales. Scroll down the Carbine page to just under the picture of the Bavarian Rural Police marked reciever. Click on the link under: " Further informationin regards to the historyof...." Lots of info including export/import of M1 Carbines from right after WW2 up thru the big retail sales in the US during the 1960's ( $66.00 for an M1 Carbine from Hunters Lodge ). And even up thru commercial imports during the reign of the Clinton. Nothing on the Blue Sky imports during the Reagan administration -- not sure why. When I was at the South Store a few weeks ago I saw several carbines with the Austrian markings on the bottom of the trigger group. Most were in very, very nice shape. I had kicked around ordering one of the Bavarians, but fell in love with a racker Winchester and a HRA FG Garand, so the CMP funds are a bit low.. I'm a bit torn between how much the Bavarians will gain value, as compared to how much my Winchester will.. Problem is, one can't buy them all..
