| new M1 carbine / made by Kahr
I have a M1 Carbine with walnut stock in the Kahr box with the little cable lock system. The S/N is MB07xx. I was wondering when it was made and anything bad and good on these guns. It appears that it has never been fired and the only time the mag was used was most likely done at the auction I got it at. Thanks

If I am correct, Kahr bought Auto Ordinance a few years ago and took over production of the AO line of carbines. There are mixed reviews for this brand as to workmanship. I recommend you thoroughly check it out before you fire it. I have read complaints about the gas piston lock being loose which causes FTF and FTE. I've also read that some USGI parts will not fit the Kahr. That is a good looking carbine. On another note...I found a Universal Ferrett in .256 Winchester today...I don't have the money to get it; but I don't really need it either. Happy shooting!

Thanks oldjarhead, I found a Iver Johnson at a gun show about a year ago for $420, a little rough but not bad, I passed it up for a NIB PT1911 sst Taurus. I thought I would not see another carbine in the $400 range again, most have been 600/650 and up. This one was really tempting and I won my bidding on it at $425 [no taxes/no shipping/no FFL fees]. There was another one [Kahr] tacitical folding 'plastic' stock, I didn't see where the bidding went with it...a little later a Hi Point 9mm [used] went for $235 [when you can get one at most shops for $169?] you never know what they stop at in bidding. I'll heed your advice and hope all will work fine...I wonder if there was a period of time that the quality was better and where my gun falls in the time frame. As with most runs and companies, there are better times to aquire than not... again- thank you for taking the time to write! the info on this site is greatly appreciated! so many knowlegeable people! wow, 256, I guess they did produce other cal.s in them, a .22 mag would be neat and I saw somewhere 9mm? too bad they don't realize that .357, .44, .45acp etc would grab some attention, at least it would me Last edited by LakerDad; 10-13-2009 at 10:23 PM. |

| The Khar gun
got off to a pretty rocky start. I have seen posts stating this firm was really an assembler of parts they contracted out to a number of sub-contractors. This is where the problems apparently arose. Too many suppliers and not enought quality control on dimensions, finish, etc. On the positive side, I have heard this firm has gotten quality control much better in hand so things are on the upswing. Best of luck with your gun. |

During the mid 1990's there were several conversions worked up for the carbine in an attept to improve killing power (9mm Mag; .45 in Mag; and a couple others) but they never really caught on. I converted one of mine to 5.7mm Johnson and I like it alot. PMI makes ammo for it but reloading is still a must. .45ACP would be a nice camp gun.

The Auto-Ords are closely patterned (if not identical) to the first model M1 Carbine, so they do not have the bayonet lug and its more secure forward barrel band according to what I've read. In fact, it was reported in one gun magazine that Auto-Ord borrowed a perfect specimen of a first model G.I. Carbine from Phil Scheir of the NRA Museum to pattern theirs after. Mine shoots quite well but the Kahr-supplied magazine did not function well. I now have some original G.I. mags and also some Fulton Armory mags which are great. The only other thing I tweaked is that the slide fit too tightly in the gap between the upper and lower stock, so it would sometimes hang up when going back into battery. Check yours on that. It was a simple matter to just sand off a little wood on the bottom edge of the upper forearm on the right side (looking towards the muzzle) and that solved the problem. Auto-Ord's barrels are made by Green Mountain, which reportedly has a good reputation. I attempted to mount an Ultimak picatinny upper forearm on it, but the action does not fit tightly in the stock/recoil lug as a result. I need to fiddle with that and if I can't correct it, I'll reinstall the original wood upper forearm. I also got a lot of good tips here on this Forum about tightening up the fit of the stock. Because I've been fiddling with it, I haven't fired it for awhile but on its first outing, I put about 50-60 rounds through it at 50 yards from a rest, with the stock iron sights, and my aging, corrected vision eyes, and got 2.5-3 inch groups. I did no break-in routine, and I have no skills with iron sights and I hate peep sights. I don't consider it broken in yet. I've since replaced the rear peep sight with an original G.I. adjustable rear sight I picked up at a gun show. I haven't fired it yet with that setup. I've been hoping to put at least a 1x red dot on it with the Ultimak upper but, per above, I have some issues with that assembly. This is the first and only M1 Carbine I've owned or fired and I really like it. The picture shows the original rear peep sight.

Where would I find a nice reproduction sling for my Kahr? Any knowledge from you guys would be great again. I got my old ammo out that I got at my 1st auction and loaded the mag that came with the gun. It holds 16 rds. I kind of thought that the thing would only hold the 10 that the Clinton administration gave us, I guess this gun was produced during the G Bush period. I remember the period when we didn't have to sign for the 22 ammo, a big thanks went out to Mr. Reagan. I had t osign for my 44 mag when I only had my Ruger 44 mag auto carbine. crazy.... Thanks! |

I noticed many offerings at the Springfield gun show this past week-end; prices ranged from $5 - $20. Most of the slings available are repros and may come in khaki or green.

Thanks oldjarhead! The repo ones will do fine. I missed our gun show this past weekend...I'll give these guys a look, Gun Parts {Numrich Arms} never have what I 'm looking for or I don't know how to look for stuff on their site, as a kid I had a great time ordering from them ie 1960's. Again thanks for your help!
