Best rifle/best price has always been the CMP. You can expect to pay considerably more at gun shows and Dealers. There is the occaisional good deal out there, but they'e few & far between.

Just my 2-cents.

Yeah Gunnerdave is right. You can find some good deals out there. I did, but the one I bought is a little rough. The old boy has been used. .

Many Garands at gun shows came from the CMP.

They are priced an extra $200-400 or more, looking for a sucker to walk in the door.
In addition to that, you will not know which parts have been changed, or whether the rifle is safe to shoot etc.

My CMP Garand (Service Grade) arrived two days ago, and I would not have considered a Garand from any other unknown seller, Period.
With two exeptions, it is the first rifle I've tried to use at 100 yards (little faith in my older eyes), and being a novice shooter, could not believe the group, using iron sights and LC ammo.

fullmetalJack:
A serious majority of buyers -if not all- seem to be glad that they chose Service Grade.

The coworker/friend (my 'Gun Guru') who bought mine at Camp Perry has over ten Garands, and retired from the Navy Marks. Team. He found good TE/ME and a very shiny bore.
It is humbling to have such an important piece of US heritage, and it helps my very modest shooting skills appear to be much better than they really are.
After learning to reload only for my Enfields, finally opened my hard head to the idea of reloading 30-06 M2.

Before deciding to reload, an M-1 was not even considered.
