New guy question

Hello M1 Garand friends,
I just found this site, so bear with me as I get started.
This afternoon I was looking at a Garand a friend is holding as collateral on a small loan.
It has an International Harvester receiver, but looks like it's mixed parts from there on.
My real question is this. Why did we find the barrel welded to the receiver?
Richard

Good question, but I would run away from it as fast as I could...it may have a cracked receiver somebody tried to fix...

Or you could find that there are other parts that are welded as well. When they make rifles drill rifles they weld the barrel to the receiver, weld the gas plug and cut a hole in the chamber to make them non fire able.

Even with it being more or less a lamp stand it is still worth a couple hundred bucks.

BUT, as moose said, if you are looking for an investment and shooter RUN!

Sounds like a drill rifle to me, also.
Have you found any small holes drilled into the receiver?
Also check the bolt face for weld marks...of course the bolt can always be replaced.
Too bad it's been done to an International Harvester receiver. I hope your friend didn't loan out too much for this collateral.

Drill rifles normally will have the bore plugged and welded, bolt welded

Veteran organization rifles that fired blanks would have a tack weld between the barrel and reciver
Why was this done? I really dont know
CMP has sold these and recommends that they not be fired
