First timer with corrosive question

I have shot many rounds thru my Garand. All have been non-corrosive. Call me chicken------ I have a butload of corrosive and was wondering what would be the least thing to do at the range after shooting? I heard windex, water, bring my cleaning kit? Down to my last few rounds of HXP and hate to break into the LC-------A fun shoot this weekend. Any quick and easy method for corrosive at the range? THX Lar

I would spray everything down with windex at the range. Make sure to remove the op rod and gas cylinder and clean them well. Although I, like you, do not like to shoot corrosive ammo through a semi auto Garands were shot a lot with corrosive ammo.

Corrosive ONLY means that the primer leaves behind a salt. In this case it's KCL. THE ONLY SOLVENT that is effective at removing KCL is water. Shoot your corrosive ammo and clean at the range normally. When the gun looks clean pour a couple of bottles of hot water down the barrel patch dry. Then run 1-2 more cleaning patches with solvent through it. Oil normally when your done. The gas cylinder is stainless and wont care about the corrosive primer. You'll want to remove the gas plug when pouring the water because some will get in the gas port. So clean that too while you're there. You dont need to remove the gas cylinder. Eric

You need to clean the Gas Cylinder, piston, front sight, chamber, barrel, bolt face and all if you use Corrosive primed ammo, even stainless pistons can be attacked as I found out...ammonia is only for copper fouling, but windex has water, a surfactant, and ammonia, so it works great for a first attack at the range...Hot soapy water OR Hoppes #9 will do a graet job at home , followed by a good oiling of all components...

Especially if the Windex contains ammonia .

Once you get the gas cylinder tight enough that it does not wobble , I NEVER Remove it . Clean it on the barrel ( it is stainless steel , you are really cleaning the barrel where the barrel contacts it ) and the gas piston on the op rod .

Remember , every time you remove the barreled action from the wood , the fit is a little looser . I would not do that more than once or twice a year .

Remember , ALL WWII .30-06 ammo was corrosive . I do not think twice about it .

Also , remember to clean good when you get the rifle home from the range .

God bless

I bring a small bottle (baby food jar) of windex with me to the range. I run a few patches through the barrel at the range, then attack the entire thing at home with more windex and hoppes 9. I haven't run any corrosive through my Garand, but plenty through my Carbine and Mosins.
