Metal furniture removal on M1

I pulled my hand guards off today to look at what I needed to do to refinish the stock.

I'm very mechanically inclined, however the metal furniture on the wood looked a little intimidating.

How do your get the metal parts off without dinkering it all up?

Butt plate comes of with the screws, Like you didn't know that. The front swival comes off by loosening it then tap it forward at the swival and it should come off. Remove the front wood by first removing the gass cyl. and it should slide right off

Have Fun

DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOWER BAND OFF as I said before the barrel is correct so make sure 1st that the role pin has been stake and not touched. If it has been boogered up then remove it.
The front hand guard can be taken apart by using a small screw driver. At the very front end of it carefully pry the tabs back just enough to pull the metal spacer out the other end. Now take a small screw driver and carefully push the front metal off. On the rear guard you have to be very careful and some times it is better to just tap it over and work the wood. Do this only while sanding as clean up wont harm it. You can oil right over the metal as it wont harm it. You can do this with the front for that matter also if wanted just tape the metal off like I said during sanding.
The rear guard honestly needs a special set of pliers or if you can drill to small rods the size of the inside holes of the band into the top of a vise you can turn the vise open while putting pressure on the metal clip so it doesn't pop off and carefully turn the guard out. When putting it back on reverse the order but if you slip the guard will snap. I hope this helps some and I would just leave the metal on to be safe, the G.I.s did. Rick B

Thanks all,
I can work around the attached metal. That seems to be the safest bet. If, if it was ever re-parkerized it would be cool to have all the metal match. IMO. I'm not too worried about historical corectness as the Dane I have is kind of a mut parts wise. I don't mind, it's my mutt

Again, thanks. I appreciate the time put in by all of you. This is going to be a fun gun to work with.

Front sight looks good. The rear one did give me a scare at first. I'd move the elevation knob and nothing happened.
The screw on the elevation knob was loose. I understand this scre can be loosened to set known shooting distances after a zero is established. In the same breath it said it can loosen during shooting at times.
