Number of M1's to Rearm US Military/1936 Gentlemen, This file shows us the number of M1 Garands for our US Military for a 100% change over from the Model 1903. Remember this is during the Great Depression when NO FUNDS were around, also not ONE Production M1 Garand has been built yet !! Look at the National Guard Numbers. ![]() My question to YOU is why so few rifles ? Warning, before you go to my sites lower your volume as the opening page contains a sound file which has a loading and firing of the M1 Garand. So if you're at work or home it may be wise to check your volume control. http://www.garandm1rifle.com garandm1rifle@rcn.com Hit'em again Thanks again Clancy Looking for Sponsors NRA Life Endowment NRA Training Counselor NRA Instructor FSS 90% / BW X Speed Div by 1000 = PF

Advance Planning Eclancy: I am a little bit impressed that our Army had the foresight to proceed with the M1 Garand even at the end of the Depression. In 1936 we were pretty far removed from a direct involvement, although the Japs were in Manchuria, and Hitler was just getting warmed up. Still, with the M1 anyway, we were pretty well prepared, and ready to go full blast when necessary.

Why so few?? I think because there was no draft at that point and because of the "isolation" politics, the US army was more like a upscaled police organisation (see the great amount of National Gard rifles). The US goverment did only want to substitute the active M1903 rifles. I don't know if I'm correct but this is how I look at it with my (limited) american history knowledge! M1D
