yo can clean 99% of that rifle without any tools. i recommend that you do not remove the gas cylinder from the barrel, and really no need to remove the rear sight.

well as I was tearing down I saw that there was some corrosion goin on in the gas cylinder so it is looking like I will have to remove it from the barrel. yeah this is gonna be fun to clean..... this thing is very dirty. Hmm I wonder what graphite lube on the op rod would do?

Well if it is a CMP rifle I would remove the rear sight clean and lube once. Some people report some rust under them. I would completely strip and clean eveything once. The gas cylinder is not hard to remove. Do not put grease inside the cylinder(its stainless steel) or on the end of the op rod as it can affect the function, if you want a very light ocat of oil on the rod and wipe off excess.. I wouldn't use graphite, the army never did. Just gease the areas where the bolt lugs ride in the op rod and under the barrel where the op rod my rub on it. Thats all thats needed.

removing the gas cylinder is not difficult, but it is not recommended. if your cylinder fits on the barrel tight, dont mess with it. my guess is that the "corrosion" you see is blue/greenish in color, dont worry about it. wipe off what you can with copper remover.

Do as I suggested and for the first time dissasemble and clean everything. Its just not recommended to remove the cylinder for every cleaning
