Welcome to GnG Boltaction. Mesquite is some pretty durable wood. It has been used as fence post. Very rot resistant but not as much as cedar. Stock has several coats of Boiled Linseed oil, BLO, and a walnut stain to start.
BTW, I am working on a Garand walnut stock that is bowed ) like a smile. Had to Dremel out front receiver area. Now have to sand back of stock at rear of receiver.
Hopefully barrel depth will be OK. Plan to bed action.
