| markings on stock
I have a springfield, may of 1944, I bought a few years back. I would like to know if anyone knows about painted numbers on stock and any explaination of what they were for. It has a dark green stripe around the butt with a series of numbers in white. I would just like to know if they had any significance, maybe D day. that would be pretty cool. thank you. |

I think these numbers are from the unit that used the rifle the last time (rack number!) As far as I know they did not use a special number or marking on the stock for D-Day It could also come from Korea but then it would probably contail Korean writings as well! Rob

Hi... I'd be inclined to agree with Rob: the painted numbers are rack numbers used by the last issuing unit. (The idea was to ease issue/return/inventory activity.) "Using unit" being the case, which one? No way of knowing, sadly. HTH Ben Hartley |
