new springfield M1 garands 7.62 NATO (.308 win)

I was wondering if the new springfield M1 garands 7.62 NATO (.308 win.) if anyone knows if it is safe to shoot 7.62 NATO military ammo through it.

At the range I go to, that's what most of the guys are using in those guns. I just wish I could afford one.

That's what they are designed to shoot. Military ammunition is loaded to lower pressures than commercial, at least in 7.62 NATO. Dowload the manual from Springfield if you have doubts.

I know that the original Garands were supposed to be fired with M2 Ball, but that's for the 30-06 version.

Some say that you shouldn't fire 7.62NATO in .308 chambers...It's so close, and the springfield is such a rugged rifle, I really don't think it would be an issue.

7.62 NATO is perfectly safe in ANY weapon that is cal. .308. Much of the foreign Milsurp 7.62mm is loaded to 7.62 NATO specs. I have fired just about every type out there, and have found few problems.

I don't know about you guys but I think those new M1's are crap. They have no history to them. Wouldn't you rather want a nice WWII Cal.30 M1 rifle. They are so much better and my dane shoots superb, better than some of my new production rifles. Those M1's were meant to fight a war, throw a new M1 in a pile of mud and drag it threw and see how much it DOESN'T work. Just my opinion thanks for reading.

I believe Garand9015 is "RIGHT." Would you buy a reproduction of a WW2 Jeep? Or how about one of these new Dodge Chargers? Ain't nothing like the real thing.

Garand9015, have you dragged a new Springfield M1 through the mud, or fired one?

What is your definition of "superb?"

that is a good question on the reliability. I am wondering the same thing due to the great reputation of Springfield and the way that guns are made today compared to during WW2. Not saying that the weapons from WW2 were bad but as new stuff comes in it to make them faster and better than before. Anyway I would like to see them test one out.

No history and twice the price. I am sure the new Springfields are nice, but I could get two from cMP, rebarrel one into .308 and leave the other .30/06. and still have enough for a can of ammo.

I personally do not like them at all. They are WAY overpriced and why buy it when you can get WWII vintage garand from cmp for 1000. Why spend it on a new one while there are danish M1's out there with the VAR barrel which is prized by collectors and target shooters. My dane with VAR gets MOA groups at 100yds no problem. One other thing is if you buy a new M1 the price is going to shoot right down after it leaves the floor. They have no collector value what so ever. One last thing, they are nice I am not saying don't buy one but consider pros and cons about them.

One other common mistake, Springfield Armory is not the Springfield on the recievers of WWII garands etc. It is a completly diffrent factory. The new Springfield armory did not produce M1's for the Military.
