| One Buwwit Weft ![]() | Batch of M1's from SOG I ordered one, and now I've heard through the grapevine that they came storage in Guatemala and are in "horrible" condition.. ![]() I ordered on the website Sunday, so I'm guessing it'll be here late this week. I did pony up the extra $25 for handpick, which I normally don't do. I know it's returnable and SOG stands behind their stuff, but I'd rather have a decent rifle than have a pile of crap that I'll return... Anyone here heard what condition they're in?

The representing photo on the catalog shows a rifle in outstanding condition. It's why I purchased from SOG. If it's in even remotely bad condition, it'll be headed right back to Ohio..

| One Buwwit Weft ![]() | Thanks for that link, Orlando.. I actually feel better after seeing the posts, but I wish someone had posted some photos. I got an email today from SOG that the rifle won't ship for 24-48 hours, so I begged and pleaded for condition info. I told them I'd much rather cancel the sale than have to ship the rifle to me and then back to SOG because it wasn't in condition that I was informed it would be in.. I'm not concerned about the stock condition. A run through a hot dishwasher brings most of those dents back to flush, and I tend to spend most of my winter refinishing stocks. I'd be more than happy doing a light sand and oil to put the stock back in good condition. I guess I'll see what kind of reply I get to my email back to SOG, and also hope that someone posts some detailed condition on the rifle they got from SOG..

| Moderator ![]() | What happened is the CMP denied these rifles, then boasted how they were out of Garands or at least hinted that the end was fianlly here. SOG got all excited and figured no matter what the condition was they would have the "only" Garands in town for sale. They are going to take a hit hard with these especially selling worn out rifles for higher prices. Now the CMP lets loose with over 200,000 Garands after they scare eveyone who buys up allot of Carbines and there is a mess at SOG. I hope you get lucky and if it is a rare one it is worth it even if worn. Rick B

I told folks they had plenty left and waiting for inspection from the military who stopped because they said they didnt not have enough extra people to work them. The CMP never once made it known they had these. They did say they can not say if anymore will be coming in as they do not know what the future holds. They made sure folks thought it was over. And then stated they would be building rifles to run out surplus. Now if you can read anything more out of that you are darn good. Rick B

| Senior Member | It's all about marketing. CMP didn't start the Chicken Littles, and they sure didn't stop them. It was good for CMP - lots of rifles were sold and prices went up, there was nothing to compete with the carbines. It was both good and bad for the collector - prices everywhere went up, but the high prices got a lot of nice rifles back out into the marketplace when sellers realized the money they could now get. It will be bad for SOG - CMP now has many Garands, no import marks, and prices as good or better than SOG. Nonetheless, SOG markets to a different audience than the CMP forum member. (what percentage of Garand owners got them through CMP?) They can move these things on the internet, at gun shows, etc. Many people still think CMP is out of Garands. SOG won't take a beating. It was worth the risk to them. Besides, how much do you think SOG paid for those Garands that even CMP turned away? |

| One Buwwit Weft ![]() | All right you old farts.. After more investigation, I called this morning and cancelled my order with SOG. It was about to be put on the truck, and the WONDERFUL lady actually went out and removed it before it was shipped. Again, I can't complain about SOG's customer service. I've stopped in at the warehouse and picked guns up and they're very nice in person, too. So, I'll order a Service Grade from CMP today and use the money I saved for some ammo. ![]() Thanks again for your links and feedback.. ![]()

| Senior Member | The difference is "passive" versus "active". CMP letting everyone believe there were no more Garands and not dispelling the rumors by saying "we have 200,000 sitting in shipping containers" was passive. SOG posting a picture of a collector-grade Garand to hock some POS rifle that CMP rejected for some minor price (how much do you think CMP pays for them?), because they were too crappy, is active. |

| One Buwwit Weft ![]() | And I emailed back and forth with one of them today a few times. When I sent in my order, I sent in copies of my DL, IL FOID Card, Beloit Rifle Club (CMP affiliated) and my FFL 03 license.. What I didn't send is proof of citizenship/place of birth.. Even though my passport was sitting right behind me when I copied everything else.. ![]() So now I'm trying to find out how to catch up a copy of my passport with the rest of my "stuff".. Wait.. Let me have it again.. ![]() There.. I feel better now.. ![]()

| Moderator ![]() | CMP pays $15.00 for the Army to inspect them and pass them over to them to sell. There building a building is on them as is there extras they made happen to be able to sell the poop out of these as fast as they can. Remember it was one Garand for life and they were doing fine. They got marketing and made it so you could buy plenty and then built on that not because it was better selling practice. Don't try to talk about there extras they made happen as legit expenses. They do not have more than $150.00 in each gun and I am betting it is half of that to be honest. Shooting is down some and many programs have stopped. There banking allot of money and I think the amount would make your head spin. Also the CMP was reported to have a large amount of the Guatemalan Garands 2 years ago. They were said to be pure junk. I wonder if SOG bought them from CMP. I know of many deals that have gone down like that. Do you think it was fair for guys to buy full pallets of ammo at the matches? It happened and pissed allot of people off. They pulled trucks up and had the pallets put on. Rick

That's what my post was about.. Emailing customer service today.. We ran a couple emails back and forth, and she said she'd have an answer for me tomorrow.. I'm not concerned about when I get the rifle, but I just want to make sure I get everything together at the same time.. I figured I over did it with all the stuff I sent, but I should have sent one more piece of ID to cover all the bases.. ![]()

| Moderator ![]() | Orlando, I know many who work there and they pay the military to inspect the imported rifles. Please learn a bit more before you get all bent out of shape. I'm not going to argue with you over this. The CMP doesnt even test fire there rifles anymore, completely packed barrels proves this but I bet you will argue that also. Rick B

| Senior Member | I just got my dealers catalog from SOG tonight and there is a big thing on the cover about the SOG Garands. They show a picture John Wayne holding a Garand in "The Sands of Iwo Jima" and show a picture of a brand new looking Garand. I hope too many people don't get burned by this.

Last time I placed an order for 10 different items, they had one thing in stock.. I told them to keep it and send ALL my money back.. I've had pretty good luck with SOG.. I'd rather that they tell me they don't have any, than take my order, money, and THEN don't have any to ship.. ![]()
