Exclamation

"The ammo I was shooting was a batch I picked up from AIM a couple months ago, being 192 rounds on clips. I've got a 400 round box from Century, but I think I need to wander over to the CMP North Store for a batch of ammo.." Thought I would just bring this up. Check the headstamp on the ammo and if any of it is marked with KA, make sure you give it a GOOD cleaning after shooting it. A friend shot some of it through one of his and didn't clean it too well, and next time out he had rust showing in a lot of places on his M1. Corrosive primers.

to help those of you shooting this corrosive stuff keep an empty and when you get home chamber the case and then fill the barrel with windex and leave it for 30 minutes or so. Then come back and clean it and you will not see any sort of rust as the ammonia will kill the corrosive salts.

Thumbs up

Not just the barrel. Chamber, bolt face, oprod, bullet guide etc. Anywhere the gasses blows, it contaminates the metal. He even had rust on the front of his front sight. Almost completely covered the first 6 inches of his oprod. I still shoot some of this ammo that I bought a long tme ago, but only through my M1 with the barrel that is basicaly toast. It will all be gone soon, by then I will be ready for a new barrel on this one.

Thanks for the heads up on the corrosive ammo.. All the mil-surp 30-06 ammo I have isn't corrosive, but I clean the gun after shooting as though it was..
It's a habit that I got from shooting all my corrosive 8mm Mauser and 7062x54R ammo in other toys..

Anyway, I braved 14" of fresh snow and 30mph winds to wander down to FedEx and pick up my H&R.. The serial number's pretty much in the middle of the run at 5,592,XXX and the gun's in great condition.
The barrel is a HRA from 3/55 and my hillbilly method of checking the muzzle wear shows around 3/8" of space between the brass of a round from where it stops due to rifling.. Truth be told, the barrel looks like the only marks on it are from when it was put into place when last assembled.. It really looks unfired..

The barrel, receiver, and rear sights are all HRA, and everything else looks to be SA.

The wood is original with typical dings, and my only complaint is that there's a semi-nasty mark on the wrist that's the same size as a micrometer adjuster for the rear sight, so I'm guessing it's from the rifle that was next to it in shippment.. I'll see if I can't bring it up with a bit of steam from an iron, or maybe I'll give it the full treatment and refinish the stock in time..

It came with little cosmoline, but heavy on the grease on most parts.. I'll give it a good scrubbing and post some photos. Stupid camera is in my computer bag at work..

Again, very, very happy with this latest CMP purchase.

Now when's my Carbine gonna get here?

Again, Congrats Paper! I am getting in the mood to start looking for a good garand. My Mosin collection continues to grow. A good garand would be something I would enjoy.

In reality, it pretty much looks like every other Garand, but that's not all bad..

And here's the marks in the wood I mentioned.
