Muzzle Wear / Throat Erosion

Hi, AJ...

Um... that's what I told him. Noel got 'em crossed, and I simply pointed out that a 3 TE isn't any big deal, and "quite a bit of bullet" provided that the edges of the rifling lands are good and sharp/clear and there are no serious dings in the muzzle would indicate he hasn't much to worry about there, either. (Yes,I know that the "bullet test" is -- at least may be -- fraught with error, but it's better 'n a calibrated eyeball.

Look, I was trained on an M1, and I usually get something around 5" at 100 yds shooting a barrel which is a "3" or so at both ends. No, I don't do all that much shooting anymore, and I'm simply physically incapable of doing much better. That's why the recommendation that Noel search out a more experienced M1 shooter with whom he can personally interact.

I don't really like the bullet test for the online and auctions sales. It's easy to hump that test up. Usually you get a close-up picture of the muzzle with the bulet in it, hopefully showing some bullet between the muzzle and brass.

The problem is, you really never know what kind of round is used. Also, some scumbag sellers "alter" the bullet to always pass the bullet test.

Noel, usually the TE is higher than ME so chances are you got a good barrel.

Thanks for all the help guys… When I was in the army they gave me Marksman right out of the gate… I was quite shocked… Something I was good at, that I didn’t have to work hard for… hu? That was almost 40 years ago... Like Ben, now it’s hard for me, physically to go to the range, but I pay for it the day after… Bad back and all… I hate to give it up… 5” groups is not that good with any of my other rifles but I was just curious if it was the rifle or me… I must admit, a target at 100 yards, without a scope, is starting to look a little fuzzy to me… I have always leaned more toward being far sighted but I think I’m starting to lose the other end also… I don’t like buying a gun, from some guy I don’t know, on the other side of the USA… But I don’t have it in me anymore, to drive hours, and then walk for hours, around a gun show, to find what I am looking for anymore. It’s kind of like gambling… Hell it is gambling to buy one off the computer monitor. So far I have been fairly luck… I have only gotten a few that I would not have bought if I had it in my hands first… One thing is for sure… its nice to have a bunch of old gun farts to talk to about it without leaving the house…Thanks again guys! Noel

Noel, Welcome to the site and welcome to m1 Garand shooting. What you state above is the best reason to check out the CMP for a Garand or Carbine purchase; good buys on ammo also. Gun shows are fine to spend time looking around but I'm discovering that way too many lies and spins occur at such a medium; especially when it comes to military rifles.
Have a good'un.

Thanks Oldjarhead … From what I have read on the CMP site, I have to sign up through an affiliated club and the only two in my neck of the woods are a couple of high schools down in Sacramento… I was really surprised to see that the range I go to is not on the list…. The Lincoln Rifle Club has been around for 84 years… I know there must be a way around this I just haven’t gotten too it yet… Thanks again….

Noel, you can also belong to one of several oraganizations including FOP, American Legion and VFW. There is an AL or VFW in darn near every town. There are FOP lodges everywhere too. They'd love to have you as FOPA if you were never law enforcement.

Remember, the AL and VFW have cheap beer in the canteen and many great events. I can't remeber how much my AL membership is, but it's not much and you can go to any post in the country.

Noel, try this:

American Legion LINCOLN DEMING POST 468

I don't know how close it is to you. While I don't spend much time in bars, the American Legion is the kind of place you can take your kids to. Cheap beer, good food, great people. You can leave your wallet and keys on the bar when you hit the head and they are there when you come back. You know what I mean.

Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Membership

Hi, Noel...

Try this URL for the CMP Membership requirements:

http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pdf

This is the actual order form but does include all the requirements.

Off the top of my head:
1. US Citizen -- copy of your birth certificate
2. Club Membership -- There are a lot of other options, and the Garand Collector's Association is one of them. GCA website is at Welcome!
3. Marksmanship Activity -- If you're a veteran, and can provide a copy of your DD214, that's sufficient.
There.

Hope this helps, some.

Ben Hartley
