Need some help with a grand!

So i have been wanting a M-1 for a while now, and today i was at a gun show. I found a grand for $600.00. It is chambered in.308, how ever the recieve was 30-06 with not stampings on the rear of it. Everything looked in good shape, with good rifling. The receiver looked like it had no wear on it at all. The transfer is in progress, and im going to have a smith look at it on monday. Can anyone here give me a couple good idea of what to look for and what to ask. I know firearms fairly well, seeing that Im a marine and been working with firearms since I was a kid.

Garand! what was the name of the manufacturer on the heel of the reciever? there are some shady rifles out there that you do not want.

I would bet it's built on an aftermarket receiver.

Well thats what i was wondering about. The heel of the reviece was blank. i dont care if it is aftermarket. just as long as it will fire, and put a good group together. If i have to Ill do some work on it myself. But i am going to get it check otu before I make the deal final.

run away from it, dont walk! probably has cai stamped on it somewhere, and that would make it junk.

As others have mentioned, check out the receiver situation as you
may have a questionably receiver.

Also, check the operating rod to see if it has any bend in it as this will signify abuse from either the shooting of overpower loads or perhaps a massive amount of regular firing. A bent operating rod is bad news.

A bent op rod is normal. An "improperly" bent op rod is bad.

Look for a name or serial number on the side of the receiver under the rear sight.

Ok so i contacted the guy I am buying it from and he said he has two other garands he wants me to look at. If any of them have A CAI reviever im going to pass on them and go with a CMP garand. So far I hear good things about CMP. Does anyone know how long it will be till they dont have anymore garands?

Note that CMP won't be a mark on the receiver, the receiver will be Springfield, Winchester, H&R, etc.

The CAI receivers aren't just rough, they have improper locking geometry for the bolt lugs. That is a big deal. If it was an AK or G3 or such there would be ways you could deal with it, but with a Garand such a receiver really is irreparable junk.

Why get a Garand chambered for 308, very expensive ammo. Go with a CMP Garand

Also some garands were converted to 308 by means of a chamber plug that would come out when you least expect it and ruin your whole day and maybe rifle to boot. Get a 30-06 unless its a new one chambered in 308 to begin with.
