My M1 S#1618043 was issued to me in boot camp in 1943 (you had to memorize the S# or sleep with it). Loading a new clip the bolt was as noisy as ejecting the empty one. It depended on where you were, jungle or beach and the noise around you. I can not remember paying any attention to the "ping".

Hello All:

Two points. First off my Father, World War Two veteran, Pacific. Had told me decades ago of them, American soldiers, tossing empty M-1 enbloc clips on to the groundf to bait Japanese to reveal themselves. I assumed this was done while trying to find single "snipers" not in the heat of a fire fight.

Second point, Dad also said that when they knew they were getting ready to assault an objective they'd put clips of ammo in pockets, and also force the clips onto their shirts. Putting them where the fabric of their shirts were wedged between the two vertical columns of the clip.

Tossing a empty clip on the ground would be useless unless it followed a shot.
