Im rebuilding this old rusty M1 someone left in their garage or basement. What is an ajustable gas plug for and where do I get one? If you dont mind me asking. Very Impressive Garand JP.

It's called a Schuster DCM Adjustable Gas Plug and Midway USA as well as a few other places sell them for $30ish. It will allow you to tune how much pressure is delivered to the op rod. Even if you shoot standard ball ammo you could use this to simply extend the life of the rifle namely the op rod and bolt lugs. It will allow you to use virtually any commercial ammo in your Garand but you will have to back the screw out and tune it for that load.

Correct. I am planning to shoot both commercial loads and handload heavier long range bullets plus I'll be messing around with powders that would normally cause gas port pressure issues in an M1. If all you shoot is Mil Surp Ball ammo it's not needed.

JP, beautiful gun. My pride and joy is in an ablum of the same name. I'm relitively new here and just figured out how to get pics to an album.

Great post and pics jbwilly,
I don't know what condition the Garands are coming in these days. I bought my three rebarreled Garands in 1994/95. They were in very good condition except that their stocks were dinged up from being knocked around inside of armory racks and being stacked. I thought about investing in replacement stocks until I read that the dings could be streamed out with a hot wet towel and a steam iron. The procedure worked leaving just slightly darker than normal geometrically shaped blemishes flush and smooth with the stock surfaces where the dings used to be. If you feel the need to refinish the stock, do so sparingly with 000 steel wool and wipe down with a damp cloth. When refinishing; stain and use boiled (preferred) or raw linseed oil in a ventilated area. Sanding with 000 between coats will make a mirror finish; I chose to keep mine a service level satin finish.

I thought of turning one Garand into a match grade tack driver, but that isn’t a priority considering my ’03 Springfield and Rock Island rifles that already do that. With continued practice, you’ll be surprised how much “more” performance you can squeeze out of a Garand without additional work.
