I'm no expert by a long shot and can only present a theory.

Perhaps what you have is an experimental barrel for using the Garand as a "bolt action single fire" sniper rifle. By not having a gas port, 100% of the pressure energy could be transferred to the projectile there-by improving accuracy. By being used in this manner there would be no noise from the weapon cycling and the shooter would be able to control any cycling sounds by manually slowly pulling back the operating rod for each shot...he could also control the tell-tale 'ping' from the clip ejecting.

Just a thought.

Sounds like a good theory! I'll buy the bit about improving accuracy.

In the states like Pennsylvania you can not hunt with a Semi auto like the Garand. But if you do as you did then it would be legal. In my state Ohio you can not even use a rifle to hunt, it has to be a shotgun which is insane as many areas are wide open country. Rick B

I concur, Illinois is the same way.

We can use Garands and any semi auto rifle of adequate caliber for hunting in South Carolina, as long as it is limited to five rounds. I have a "five" round enblock clip somewhere and used it once in one of my Garands; but I'm with a lot of you on the notion that a non-semi auto is more accurate. When hunting deer, accuracy with the first shot means more than a lot of follow up misses. One fatal hit …or one clean miss is the way to go.

As for the mystery barrel, wunhunglo's theory sounds the most feasible.

Yes, A non-ported Barrel would make the Garand a single shot , and not a Semi-auto...What a waste of a Garand in my Opinion...But I understand the Draconian British Laws. A gun that shoots slowly again is still just as Deadly as one that can shoot again a little faster!

I have a Garand 10" bayonet that does not have the "slot" cut in it for the release clip.

Couldn't that barrel have been one a human being missed the drilling process. Mayby he had the military quick steps or a shift change and the barrel was overlooked?
