get both.

They are on different ends of the spectrum:

One is small and shoots a smaller bullet really fast and is easy to customize and carry lots of extra ammo.

The other is a large rifle shooting a large .30 cal bullet that is difficult to
customize and carries limited amounts of ammo but is effective at barrier penetration and can be used on anything on the North American Continent.

Both are great rifles and both would work just fine in most situations if their individual limitations are known and their advantages are utilized: don't use a M1 to clear confined hallway room to room, don't use an AR15 to shoot through a cinder block wall. Both could do those tasks, but the other would be a better option to achieve your goal more effectively.

I have both and it reallydepends on the situation. If you have lots of open space in the wilderness the M1 all the way but if your in close quarters in a city or suburb go with and AR and some typ of modern optic. I just recently picked up barska M-16 sight and its amazing how easy and fast and accurate it is.
