Smile M1 Rollcall

Gunnerdave.

Nice looking stock. The CMP walnut stocks sure do have some nice grain in them. A little BLO & Tung oil and they look fantastic.
I think they are a great value for the $$.

Just my 2 cents.

Who is DGR? And will DuPage re-work Boyd's stocks for flunkies like me?

OK, I just called Dupage, and they get Boyd's stocks in a roughed-out configuration, then they re-profile them for the CMP. He said they couldn't re-profile a finished Boyd's stock like mine, it would cost the price of several new stock sets. Bummer.

But, who is DGR?

Never mind, found it. Dean's Gun Restorations, rights? Duh.

Thanks! I took the pics shortly after I got it. Once I do the final fit, I'm going to work on the finish a bit with more BLO & a good coat of gunny paste. I'll go for a satin finish, but if it ends up a bit shiny, I'll still be happy with it.

I think they're really a great deal for American Black Walnut. Love the grain.

Dave

What's going on rondog? DGR stands for Dean's Gun Restorations. Here is the website: DGR Home Page - Dean's Gun Restorations

Time to heat it up again. Here is my first and only Garand, a 1955 Springfield Armory example. Even though it was a Field Grade, it is all SA and most of the parts, including the original stock, are period-correct. I have a little thing about milled trigger guards though. Throat and muzzle erosion are both low. Here it is as-delivered at the end of March, a bit of an ugly duckling:

And here it is after my wife gave me a Dean's standard grade, slim-cut walnut stock in dark brown with #2 finish.

I've kept the original stock for historicity but I'm thrilled with the visual transformation. I have to say that, as a novice, there's no better way to get to know your rifle than to remove the stock. As I was doing the replacement, I first replaced all the metal on the buttstock and fitted it. I was amazed at how well the colors of the new and old wood matched. Another shot of the final product:

...and there are more shots HERE.

I now live in Tidewater, Virginia. I grew up just outside Knoxville near Bearden. In college, I lived only a couple of miles away from Dean's, just North of Knoxville.

Tex where do you get that fine piece of American craftsmanship. I am getting mine from CMP sometime this summer. I do the High Power Match and training tomorrow so I need to pick a date to run to Ohio sometime after that.

The day I ordered one from the CMP, I found this one on Gumpoker. Bought it from a guy out of Ohio. Seemed to be a nice rifle. I can't wait to receive the shipment and shoot!!!

I will only let you peer through the glass of my van at the rifle. When you have completed the CMP First steps orientation class then I MAY let you touch the stock...only if you wear white cotton gloves.
