Hes just yanking your chain. You have a WWII forged trigger guard instead of the later stamped metal trigger guard

Greetings to you all
New kid on the block.
Been around the block a few times however.
I am the proud owner of a Garand I purchased from the CMP.
Uncle Sam let me shoot one of his many years ago, so I thought I
should have my own.
Been a long time since I used one of these beauties and I have forgotten
a lot. So if I come up with any dumb questions, please over look it.

Thank you.
I have owned the rifle for some time but have never had occasion to take it
out to the range. As soon as I get finished painting the deck that will change. LOL

Welcome to the forum! Hope you got a good bit of M2 ball with the rifle. They're just too much fun to shoot.

That identifies it as a casting that was machined, commonly called a "milled" trigger guard. The other style has a "dogleg" there instead of a ring, and those were stamped out of steel, not a machined casting.
I believe the milled t/g's are correct for most WWII vintage rifles? Could be wrong. I just think they look better anyway, more "authentic" I guess. My '43 Springfield is like that.

I prefer the more positive lockup you get with the milled guard's rear hook.

| Garand Arrives! I just received my SA SG, it's a real beauty. CMP stock, good looking metal overall, with a bright throat on the barrel; so it’s probably not been re-furb'ed or re-Parked. Barrel, trigger group, and bolt are HRA. Receiver serial number is 587XXXX, indicating manufacture in 1955. Sent in my order on 1/28/09, got the rifle on 6/30/09. Here’s a few photos. The target was shot at 100 yards, resting on my range bag, so I've probably got a 3 MOA rifle, maybe a little better. |

Thanks! I was wondering about the stock. It's new wood from CMP so it has that slightly rough feel. Maybe a couple coats of Tung Oil will seal the wood and smooth it up a bit. Or would a clear varnish be better?

wow, that is a spitting image of mine from the cmp
I am currently applying BLO to mine. It's coming out really good. I'll probably do a few more coats and put it all back together again.

Will post them as soon as I get the pictures and figure out how to do so. I am a rotary dial telephone sorta of guy. My kids tell me I am digitally challenged.
I have quite a supply of ammuniton from CMP and I also have some old
ammunition with corrosive primers. I am trying to decide if I want to shoot them or not. Maybe pull the bullets and reload some of my own. I am going to order another couple of cans from CMP this week.

| Here she is, my very 1st M1 Garand. Purchased from the CMP- she came with a new stock installed. I've named her "Earl', as she is a late March 1943 receiver anyways. FYI, I did installed the web sling before taking the pictures....

| No sir. I've had that sling since about 1988 (when I purchased my 1st M1 Carbine-commercial brand). I bought that web sling way back then thinking it fit my M1 Carbine & had after learning it did not fit the Carbines, I packed away. I ran across it again after all these years when I started reading about the CMP and had ordered my Inland M1 Carbine. I guess I knew way back then that I'd own a Garand some day... =o)
