tbird... I have a question, and yes, I'm serious...
Did you take a photo of the box before you opened it?? I think I got to my 3rd package from CMP before I actually opened the box before I took a picture of it..

Well I took a pic of mine before I took it out of the box. It was really a nice box.

| No. I opened the box, installed the sling, pulled the bolt open, inspected the bore, opened the butt stock trap door, etc. then placed "Earl" back in his box & then took these pics....

| My new Garand
Finally found my Garand! I looked at public gun shows for one, but the pickings were slim and they were not very good for the asking price. I was reluctant to take my chances with CMP, but considered a trip to Port Clinton since I lived in Ohio.
A friend invited me to the Ohio Gun Collectors Association show and I was amazed. This show made the public shows look anemic! I saw 10 or 20 Garands to choose from. I was not looking for a battle carried rifle for collectors sake, but a good shooter that was in excellent shape.
Then I saw it. I went on to see what others the show had to offer, but came back. It looks new. It is a 6.8 million serial by SA. Barrel 1955 which may be original and is TE 2.0 and ME 1.0. Perfect wood, no apparrent wear.
I suspect it had been refinished - reparked and new wood as it has no cartouch. It may be even all original. All marked parts are SA.
I qualified in the M1 while in the service among other small arms (in the 1950s). I carried an M1 Carbine for duty and appreciated the weight, but thought it was junk as a combat rifle. I also competed in matches with the Garand while in the service. There is nothing like it.

| M1 Roll Call
Sailorken,
All I can say is WoW! That is one beauty of a M1. The only trouble I see with it is that it is all alone. You do realize you now are infected with Garanditis and from now on you will look at all Garands with a little bit different view.
Enjoy that rifle, it should be a great shooter.
Give us a range report.

| My new Garand
Well, I do have a range report.
The same friend who got me into the OGCA show has a 200 yd. range on his farm. I got the opportunity to run 2 clips through the gun allowing others to try it too.
My friend suggested zeroing at 100 yds first so I could get on the paper. I assurred him I could do it at 200 yds. (I hoped)
Well, I set the windage to zero (whatever wind we had was at our back) and the elevation at 10 clicks. These guys all shoot rifles with scopes using bench rests. This seems sissy! Although I did use the table, I didn't use any sandbags or rest. I put on the sling and adjusted the seat height so I could get on target with the tight sling on.
The first two rounds I fired were about 11" above the bull and the windage was right on - about 6" apart. I guess I'm happy.
It had been raining, but next time I'll get down and use the military prone position and believe I can do better.
On another topic: I pulled the bullet from a HPX round that came from CMP to see what was in it. 52.1 gr. of ball powder and a 151 gr. bullet is what I found. The lead shows at the base of the bullet, which is square base. (not boat tail)

Here is a picture of my two M1's from CMP and one of me shooting its younger brother just a few weeks ago somewhere in Al Anbar. Great rifles. One is a correct grade SA that is absolutely beautiful, wood is great with the original marks. I think CMP hooked me up because they new I was a Marine. The rifle is gorgeous and shoots 2 MOA at 200yds with surplus Greek ammo. The other rifle is a CMP special with a 4.8 million SA receiver. The rest of the weapon is new or refurbished with a 2006 SA barrel.

Very beautiful rifles there. Thanks for sharing. Good to hear all are back safe. Is the M14 used a lot over there? Is it chambered in 7.62 NATO? Are there any .30-06 weapons in use in that theater?

Thanks, I love my two new toys!!!! The M14's are being used quite a bit as a DMR. Its a great weapon to use when a quick fallow on shot is required. When one of my Snipers or DMR's werent using the M14 Id take it on a patrol and leave the M4. Sadly as far as I have seen there are no 30.06's being used in country. The M40 and Mk11's are 7.62 just like the M240 and my M14.

Hello everybody, Newbe here. I love my Garand(serial#28131xx). It serves me well in our local off-hand,300 yard prone and 3 position matches. The sling is a JHW. Here's a family photo with her little brother. |

You've got some beauties there! Keep the posts coming. There are more Garand owners out there than this.

Garand count update:
Since the last post of 180 Garands counted, there are 15 more to add. So we are now up to 195 M1 Garands. Thanks to all who continue to post, lets keep the thread going. Surely there are many more Garand owners out there than this!

Nice looking rifle, it was worth the wait wasn't it!
Pictures are also good, but someone put their finger in one of them
I think if you clean up that stock a little you will find some beautiful wood under some of that grime.
I have a couple of H&R's from the CMP and they are very nice weapons
