Well, I just received my 1st M1 Garand yesterday. Got it from the CMP. I am very happy with it. It an HR Service grade. Except for the bolt (SA) and the trigger housing (IH); all other parts are HR. Barrel is original 1955 LMR quality barrel. Original to the 1955 HR. SN#5623xxx. The only none original part is the stock. Apparently the stock wasn't acceptable, so the CMP put on a brand new CMP birch stock. I'm happy. If available over time, I might look for an HR bolt and stock and make it all HR. But if not, no big deal. I'm happy with it the way it is. Here's some pics

| M1 Garand
Hey everyone
I just picked up a m1 garand from big 5 store. It cost me almost 900 dollars out the door with background cheack here in CA.I found out about cmp just before i made the purchase.Looking at the cmp web sight, It looked hard to get a rifle with the waiting period and all.But i think i am going to join in the fact that It seems much cheaper though cmp and better quality.Does anyone know if ill get a better rifle though cmp?I spent hours cleaning and learning the rifle.I have worn out 3 30cal brushes on cleaning the barrel. And still have some not much left but enough to wear out 1 more 30cal brush for sure,Is that normal in a gun that has 30 to 40 years of wear/storage?And is that normal for a cmp bought rifle too?I have not even shot this weapon yet.Taking it apart so many time it looks to me that it will operate fine.Is there any problems that i should look for when shooting my M1 garand at the range?Thx for any info everyone

Congrats on your rifle! The Garands from Big 5 seem to be well worn but can be great rifles. The main thing to look at is the condition of the receiver. Look for deep pits due to rust, weld marks on the underside of the receiver, etc. The receiver is the main building block. If other parts need to be changed then they are still widely available. Barrels with a lot of life left can be found for a relatively small price. Just make sure you have a competent gunsmith install and headspace it for you. Garands are rugid rifles.
The CMP is the way to go if you want a Garand. Their garands are well worth the wait. You will get a rifle in better condition with a service or field grade CMP rifle plus have the CMP armrorers behind you for support. Check the muzzle wear and crown of the rifle if you can. Check the condition of the crown with a q-tip. wipe the q-tip around the muzzle, if it does not shred or stick then the crown is in good shape. The condition of the crown can effect accuracy more than wear in a lot of situations.
I have had rifles that I have cleaned years of rust out, cleaned up the bore and action and had them shoot very accurately even with the barrel being pitted and dark.
Enjoy your piece of history!

Big 5 is not the best place to buy a surplus rifle...period. Usually very over priced for the condition.
BUT
Since you didn't want to wait, you still have a piece of history that you will enjoy shooting. My first Garand had been Bubba'd and it took some heavy handed scrubbing and some repairs but it is a fine looking and enjoyable piece.

I have only one (thus far). I travelled overnight to the Alabama store in July to pick out a good SA shooter. As such it may not have been as valuable as the H&R's they had, and it doesn't all match up, but it does have excellent metal and mechanics, and the barrel's great and it really shoots surprisingly well.
It's a mid-6million serial made in late '55, barrel 56, I'm guessing it's a Greek return (?). It has no stock markings but a P near the grip. The stock is three different kinds/colors of wood. None of these cosmetic issues bothers me in the least, as I bought it for its performance capacity, which it meets in spades.
The stock had that black buildup of grime and dirt that resisted dissolution with denatured alcohol but did dry it out enough to come off with a sanding, which was purposefully kept very light. As a result some spots of black remain on the grip and all it's dings and dents are slowly being filled in as I finish it with polyurethane. I know that's not 'spec', this stock wasn't worth all that, but I like the effect of getting it down to the wood and the abuse it weathered and kind of putting that look under 'glass'. A smooth finish over all that character will look great with the good metal, and I'll let its performance speak for itself.

Matt, how did you get the serial number & nomenclature to stand out so clearly in white? On my rifle, the line "Cal 30 M1" is stamped so shallow it's barely readable. Any suggestions?

I wonder if a steady hand has to come through there with a little white paint on the tip of a toothpick or a very fine bristles brush of some kind? I imagine with some model paint or something like that you could achieve the same results, and then take a rag with some mineral spirits or thinner lightly dabbed, and wipe off any excess? If your stamps are very shallow, it might not work as well when you wipe it all off.

I enjoy reading the comments and the pictures but I will never put out pictures of my guns or tell how many because I don't trust Obama and his fellow Chicago liberals. I have a concealed weapons permit but feel unsure about that because now there is a record at the state level that I have at least 1 pistol. As a combat veteran that has used both the M-1 Garand and M-2 Carbine in combat I enjoy this forum.
I guess I should adopt the guns motto "That I would not be so paranoid if every one was not out to get me" :>)
