I got my first Garand 1 month ago, a CMP Sevice Grade:
SA Receiver May 1945, SA Barrel, HRA Op rod, and WRA Bolt. Well used stock. Shoots great and gives me nothing but smiles. My only regret is that the hand guard is new wood. M1 Carbine on order.
My next Garand (and there will be a next one) will be hand picked in Ohio.

Very nice rifles guys. That mini Garand looks like fun! Wouldn't mind having a shot at one of those myself. Too bad I wasn't close enough to go to one of the stores myself.

Well I have already been reminded twice so I guess I will get on it!! LOL!
Anyway, here are a few pics of her. She is a Springfield with low serial number 184xxx. none of the parts have matching numbers except for a few but all of them are marked with an SA. I have taken it to the range only a few times and it now functions perfectly. I had to get a new gas cylinder shipped "new" in the package from Italy and had the Op rod sent to a guy in Ohio to get it straightened and a little work done on it. It is not sighted in yet but it was pretty close the first time I shot it as I hit the large objects I was aiming at. It cycles flawlessly now and it is a joy to shoot.

I have only 1 Garand, a 1941 SA that has been well used and badly abused. I am trying to bring it back in shape with new parts - op rod, new springs all around, and currently waiting on a new clip latch. Once complete and able to fire it and keep the clip from ejecting early, I will work on the wood. I don't plan on sanding, just clean it up and re-stain. Like many others, I fired the M1 Garand, .30 Cal. Carbine and .45 (1911) while a soldier in the
60's.

Thanks guys! She is a real beauty to look at too! Whenever I get my dream house I am going to build a vault and put her in a glass case right in the middle of the room! LOL! I was wondering though, is there any kind of a wood polish or something to use on the stock? some parts of it are shiney and other parts have a weird dull gray color on it. Do I use some sort of oil?

Do I use some sort of oil? | Boiled linseed oil for the stock, and the metal parts are a hodge podge of parts that are turned into a gun.. You kinda get what you get.. My carbine has the same issue.. I just call it "character"..
Check around here for tons of info on stock refinishing, or reconditioning, or just dressing up.. Also check out New Page 1 and also do a search on Google for stock refinishing.. You'll find way more info than you'd want, but give it a read and ask questions..

A few pages back I discussed refinishing with someone- I did it to my Garand and it turned out perfectly.. however, I sat on the digital camera and shattered the screen haha. So I will take some photos when I get a chance but I would just browse through the pages in this thread until I found the process. Worked amazing- I have people come talk to me about the finish without fail everytime i bring it out of the case.
in my opinion it should be done to all these beautiful guns!

Hey Colonel--- Where do we rank? Have you been keepin tract? My guess - were close to a brigrade Squad - 9 to 10 soldiers. Typically commanded by a sergeant or staff sergeant, a squad or section is the smallest element in the Army structure, and its size is dependent on its function. Platoon - 16 to 44 soldiers. A platoon is led by a lieutenant with an NCO as second in command, and consists of two to four squads or sections. Company - 62 to 190 soldiers. Three to five platoons form a company, which is commanded by a captain with a first sergeant as the commander's principle NCO assistant. An artillery unit of equivalent size is called a battery, and a comparable armored or air cavalry unit is called a troop. Battalion - 300 to 1,000 soldiers. Four to six companies make up a battalion, which is normally commanded by a lieutenant colonel with a command sergeant major as principle NCO assistant. A battalion is capable of independent operations of limited duration and scope. An armored or air cavalry unit of equivalent size is called a squadron. Brigade - 3,000 to 5,000 solders. A brigade headquarters commands the tactical operation of two to five organic or attached combat battalions. Normally commanded by a colonel with a command sergeant major as senior NCO, brigades are employed on independent or semi-independent operations. Armored cavalry, ranger and special forces units this size are categorized as regiments or groups. Division - 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers. Usually consisting of three brigade-sized elements and commanded by a major general, divisions are numbered and assigned missions based on their structures. The division performs major tactical operations for the corps and can conduct sustained battles and engagements. Corps - 20,000 to 45,000 soldiers. Two to five divisions constitute a corps, which is typically commanded by a lieutenant general. As the deployable level of command required to synchronize and sustain combat operations, the corps provides the framework for multi-national operations. Army - 50,000 + soliders. Typically commanded by a lieutenant general or higher, an army combines two or more corps. A theater army is the ranking Army component in a unified command, and it has operational and support responsibilities that are assigned by the theater commander in chief. The commander in chief and theater army commander may order formation of a field army to direct operations of assigned corps and divisions. An army group plans and directs campaigns in a theater, and is composed of two or more field armies under a designated commander. Army groups have not been employed by the Army since World War II. |

Enjoyed you guys' nice photos.
Such classic beauty and power in attractive packages.
But these words don't begin to describe it.
About brigades: I have two brigades of 7.62x39 ammo, but seldom find people with time to go shoot it.
