Well, I don't know if mine is a Boyd's stock, but it has a CMP stamp on it. It looks new like a current production I am guessing. So maybe I'll go see about finding some tung oil and trying it out.

CMP Stamped stocks are reworked Boyds Commercial stocks. They had Dupage slim down the profile so they arent as fat

Mine has a Boyds stamp on the inside along the bedding Colonel. Maybe yours has the same mark? Are the Boyds stocks a certain kind of wood or is it just random?

Boyds stocks come in Birch and walnut. The stocks that come on CMP Service Grades are Birch, the stocks you buy from CMP are Walnut Obies stock pictured is walnut, IronColonel's should be Birch. Last edited by Orlando; 04-12-2009 at 12:01 PM. |

Nice stock...it was worth the wait. I've got a cousin that just ordered a CMP stock. How long was your wait? Is this the rifle that fell victim to the bad Korean M2?

I think it was worth the wait. Supporting the CMP is important. They took too much off at the buttplate though. I waited 3 months for it with the craze that's going around. And yes, there is no more Korean ammo in my house. My brother pulled all the components and reloaded into once fired brass with new primers.

| My M1
I just got my first M1 Garand and love it. I want to also get a Boyd's stock for it but a lot of people have told be that the Boyd's stocks are not perfect fit. Are They? Also where can I get one? And I can use the metal pieces off my stock I have now on the boyd's? Can you get the Boyd's with the metal pieces on it? Sorry for all the questions but I'm new. Here are some pics of my M1. Thanks

You can get a stock set with metal at the CMP e-store for $149.95+shipping. Go to www.odcmp.com Click on E-store on the left side of the home page. Then click on Parts Commercial. The stock set w/metal is item 082M. They're made by Boyds & countoured/finished by DuPage. HTH Dave

Mosin-ak, Here's a few less than perfect pics of the barreled receiver buildup with the CMP stock set without metal. HTH Dave

Just the wood. I added the metal fittings during the buildup.

That stock looks really nice! So what were you saying your having to do to the part of the stock where the barrel sits, your trying to make it a floating barrel. Do all M1 Garands have the floating barrel? I'm new to all this. And does this mean that the barrel does not touch the wood stock, if so how do you make it float, rubber washers? What grit sand paper are you using for this. I just ordered the stock so this is why I'm asking so many questions cause soon I'll be doing the same. Thanks Again!

Floating the barrel just means making sure the buttstock doesn't touch the barrel. It interferes with barrel harmonics (Known as "whip") as the bullet travels down the length of the barrel. (barrel vibrates up and down). If the barrel is in contact with the buttstock, it can adversely affect accuracy. You should be able to pull a dollar bill along the bottom of the barrel all the way to the receiver without significant resistance when finished. It's also a good idea to make sure the rear handguard isn't tight against the barrel. The clip should hold it ever so slightly above the chamber end of the barrel. The front handguard should not be tight against the lower band and should have about 1/8" or so of front to back play, though some will bond the handguard to the lower band when they "accurize", but that isn't legal for JCG matches as the rifle has to be "as issued". But I digress. 180 grit sandpaper or sanding sponge will get you there slowly, but surely. If you use a dremel, be Very careful. It can remove too much wood rather quickly. The old saying "There is no problem that can't be made worse with a dremel" comes to mind here. I'll see if I can find a link to or file on stock fitting & post it. Might have already done so on an older thread, but I'm not sure. HTH Dave

Thanks for the compliments imlne. Yeah the stock is custom. It is from DGR and it is a laminated stock. I'll probably keep it and put the stock on the M1 that I bought from CMP yesterday. Depending on how I like the CMP stock I might decide to sell it, idk.
