Thanks Big boomer. I am not sure I can find one in that range but if given a choice I will check the numbers first. I appreciate the info. Mark

Your father would have been issued a Garand made before his ship out date making it a 700,000 thru 1,000,000 number in a Springfield and probably 130.000 thru 1,240,000 in a Winchester. He also could have had anything earlier if it was pulled from storage or was anothers rifle who had left.
Hope this helps. Rick B

Marko, to be in the Colorado gun club that was posted, you have to pay a yearly fee and you have to shoot in at least one club sponsored match, according to that thread. You live in Michigan, I doubt you'll do that. |

Thanks for the clarification. Mark

Some good news:
There are thousands of clubs and lots of shooting activities that are recognized as good to go by CMP. Most veterans groups like the Legion , VFW , DVA , etc , are on the list. Many people join the Garand Collecter's Association -- sometimes right in the CMP Store. A DD214 discharge paper counts as proof of shooting activity. Currently serving status as military or law enforcement counts for both club membership and shooting activity.
There's no requirement to shoot in a CMP/NRA match anymore. There's a long list of ways to prove legit " shooting activity " here: www.thecmp.org
Click on Eligibility Requirements and scroll down the page to Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity. Here's a few more examples:
Shooting competitions.
Marksmanship clinics.
"Concealed Carry License". ( Yeah !)
" FFL or C&R license ".
Hunter Safety Course live fire.
" Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity."
The rules have changed over the last few years -- I'm surprised every time I take a new look. CMP has been fine tuning the rules to open more doors for more good people.

Read the eligibility requirements very carefully.
You must have proof of a club and a shooting activity. If you don't belong to an appreoved club in your area you need to join one. The Garand Collectors Association is the best way in my opinion - and they process membership quickly.
Then you have to have participated in a shooting activity. FFL, CCW, etc.

What he said .
I've wasted some time , paper , and money by doubling up on meeting the requirements.

My father-in-law is still around and was with the Army Quartermasters in the siege of Bastogne (attached to the 101st A.), which my wife found in his piles of stuff-lots of it.
Despite the fact that lots of people with a 30-year career keep much more than anybody would during a terrible single tour in combat, is it possible that your Dad somehow kept any old record of which units he was with, buried deep in old boxes or trunks?
I hope you have an enjoyable search for a gun, and especially some luck finding a record of where he served.

I hope you have an enjoyable search for a gun, and especially some luck finding a record of where he served. | It is possible that my mother may have some of his records, mainly because he did receive some sort of disability from Uncle Sam. I found out after he died that my frugal parents saved that money for a cushion, and with 7 kids they needed a cushion. My dad always worked and we farmed a small farm also. Since I have opened the quest for more information my mother has some paperwork in a safety deposit box and we are going to look soon. Thanks for all the encouragement and advice.
