| Strange markings on stock
Hello, I purchased an aparantly original M1 Garand this past weekend. All parts seem to be correct per Scott Duff's book. It is a 1945 rifle serial no 3828XXX built by the Springfield Armory. The stock is marked correctly SA NFR and also has the common P marking. Interestingly, however, it has two numbers stamped on the stock which appear original. It has a U67 stamped on the side of the stock in the rear toward the buttplate. It also has a 65 stamped on the top portion of the rear of the stock toward the buttplate. Any ideas what these numbers mean? Mark |

Most likely rack numbers. Post a few pictures of the numbers and cartouche please.

Here are some photos. If they are rack numbers can you tell me how they would be used? Racked where (barracks/arsenal)?

| rack numbers
Most of the U.S. rifle rifle racks like the A frame or wall racks will either show the top or the bottom of the rifle. They had to mark them so that you could see the rifle rack number

So do you think this Garand was from a Naval ship?

| stock markings
US Navy ship markings often have more letters like TENN but I have seen TN Some samples from 1903 stocks - have never found any M1 stocks with these type of markings |
