I saw an M1 Garand for sale at Big 5 in Lacey for $799. I didn't look at it to see what kind it was, or where it came from but I did notice it there. I was looking for Mosins, and their over priced Yugo 24/47 Mausers. Hard to tell how good it was without gauges. Might check them out closer this weekend and report back. I don't have any gauges, but could report back any relevant information if any of the employees know anything about it (which I would guess probably not) or I find out by manufacturer or serials.

Yeah, from what I've heard, you don't want one. Expensive wallhangers. And that info came from a Big 5 manager. You'd be better off driving to the CMP store and buying one in person.

i just got back from looking at one here in cali., they only have one. its a springfield #590xxxx looked in real ruff shape. stock looked liked it was soaked in oil at one time but maybe could be cleaned up. finish on gas cylinder was way worn. the barrel finish looked very dark. the reciever looked only ok. i just may go back with some gauges and see more. 799 is a little steep though.
Heads Zup...I just called Gander Mountain in Texarkana, Tx. One of the boss's there bought a HUGE collection of M1-Garands from an estate. That there selling at this store.
I saw 3 of them fathers day and these looked new, Thought I'd let yall know...A.H

Yea the one looked pretty rough I saw too. I know CMP is the place to get them, thats where my first came from. I just with there was one closer to WA. Driving would be expensive. I could ride my motorcycle, and it would cost half as much. And I wouldn't have a problem strapping it to the handle bars, it just covers up the speedo

Just order one through mail order IC! It takes a while to ship but you will get a nice rifle. I have one Garand and One Carbine on order along with 5 cans of garand ammo.

Yea, I was looking at some 03s, but we'll see. A little tight right now on funds. Haven't been to a the last couple local gun shows in hopes to save up a little money. And after August, I won't have any more loan payments, so I'll be able to save up some more there too. I'd like to do something soon. Also might have a line on a Remington M91 Mosin too at the next gun show middle of this month.

i just checked the one here near me again. springfield receiver. muzzle was at 2, i could not check the throat erosion. and could not check for proper head space either.
but i did take a empty shell with some copper tape at the end that would lengthen the shell about .009 inches and the bolt would not come even close to closing. alot of the receiver was caked with goop, but operated smoothly. the stock was just plane dirty with no real damage or major dents/ splinters.
i guess i would call this one a service grade.
the manager said they are all suposed to be able to be fired.
call me the dumb a$$ i bought the thang. being in los angeles you just dont see these , i just had to it. the way i figure it, it was only 200 more than the cmp service grade and not much of a wait. yes i know i could do alot with $200, but what the hey?

Congrats!!! No need to feel bad about buying a rifle! Muzzle wear and condition does not sound too bad to me. ME of a 2 is right in line with the wear of a field or even service grade rifle. On the rifles I have seen the TE should not be much more than the ME. So my guess is there is plenty of shooting life left in that barrel. May be there is an import stamp on the barrel. Not a big deal for a shooter. Only thing else is you may need to change some springs. Easily done. Plus, that is a great way to learn about the M1!

I would not rely on this method to check headspace, especially if it was a fired case
for sure i won't rely on that method for head space. but tearing it down to check was out of the question in a big five store. i may find out the in the future that shimming up a shell case to make a makeshift gauge is a stupid idea, but thats all i could think of to do.
