M-1D W/ M-84 2x Scope

Many years ago, I installed an M-84 scope on my M-1D Garand. It was very awkward to sight on the target, but I eventually was able to use it very effectively. HOWEVER, while sighting in a civilian scoped rifle recently I suddenly realized that the trouble using the M-84 scope was due to the incorrect eye relief. HOWEVER, that tube can slide no further to the rear because it encounters the original rear sight on the M-1D. NOW, I wish to know if our snipers removed the rear sight in order to adjust the M-84 scope to suit themselves.
