Not trying to start a arguement but when swapping bolts you also need a Go gauge as well as a No Go or Field Gauge How will you detect a long bolt without a Go Gauge? |

| No arguement here.I have all three and an issue field test bolt. But unless you are rebarreling a field guage will get you by.I took a rifle and six used bolts of various numbers and they all headspaced fine using all the gauges. You might develop issues with an unissued bolt as far as length is concerned but I haven't had any swapping used bolts.

I think AIMIT was just trying to keep everyone safe and I see nothing wrong or degrading in his post It was stated that unless changing barrels all you need is a Field gauge which is not true It is possible to get a long bolt that will not headspace correctly when swapping bolts. To be absolutly safe you need a Go and Field or I prefer No Go over the Field |

I do however dislike editing a post to suit your reply leaving out the gist of what the OP was trying to say. How ever if you want to quote the post in it's entirety and point out the mistakes as they relate to the entire post that show I'm talking like a man with a paper a**hole have at it,I'm by no means all knowing and happy to have the misinformation pointed out. A high percentage of the answers posted on the CMP forum as to what guage you need when swapping bolts on a rifle are answered by posters saying "all you need is a Field.I posted my answer based on that and personal experience from swapping bolts on rifles to make them correct as the OP was intending to do. | |

Sorry. I did not mean to ruffle anyone's feathers, but when JimBob says you only need a field guage to check different bolts on used barrels, I don't agree. These rifles were rebuilt with used parts and the bolts were headspaced during the rebuild. That does not mean that every other used bolt in existence will be loose enough to be safe. What if he buys a rifle from a private party and some time in the past a new barrel was installed and reamed to fit an extremly loose bolt. I did not think I was getting personal or pointing fingers, or being a hard ass. The people who know me from the other forums know that is not my nature. I was just responding to the quote and I edited it to show I was only responding to that particular part.
