I wouldn't have a clue which ones are real and which are "Fake", but since my Garand doesn't have a stamp on it, which means that my stock was replaced, am I better off leaving it alone or paying to have a stamp put on it? I don't really care either way, since I have no intention of selling it or passing it off as "authentic".

Ok here is the 2nd part of the test. Number one is a FAKE and below is the comparison. Under the pics states Authentic and fake. I would like to see as I put them up slowly if people can see the differences on them before I spot a few out. By the way the real one is from Bodyman's pictures Rick B![]() Authentic Stamping ---------------------- Fake Stamping Here are the cannons close-up which are a dead give away.

My M1 has a stamp of MM on the side of the stock. Was told it is an original Merrill's Marauders rifle by the gent who sold it to me. Dont care if the stamp is authentic, I did good on the price. |

Since we are on the subject of stamps. My Garand is a March of 1944 production by serial number. The barrel is dated 45 I am assuming it was replaced when I do not know. All of the other drawing numbers are correct for a march 44 production. Also at some point someone installed a match grade rear sight. The stock is well worn with its share of small dent and dings and one repair right on the bottom of the stock right in front of the buttplate. The question I have is I can not find any signs that this stock ever carried any stampings anywhere. Is it possible for a Garand to have been in service for any lenght of time and never been stamped? So after looking a bit closer, my guess is going to be 1, 3, 7, 9, 10 and 11 are fake, with a strong suspicion that 5 may be as well, it is almost too clear of a stamp.

If you email me I can go over it with you to see what time frame it was made. First look under the butt plate and see what markings are under there and we will go from there. Rborecky@mindspring.com Thanks,,Rick B

Bradahl, you missed #2 as a fake which brings me to why on that one. Sorry for the small pic on this one but I did enlarge the cannons. See if you can spot the issues on this one. Rick B ![]() Fake Cannons--------------------------------Authentic Cannons

Now that you have pointed out the fake ones I am noticing one think they all seem to have in common. They all look like they were burned into the wood instead of stamped like the authenticly marked ones you have pointed out. The impressions of the fake ones are all black and look to be much deeper than the real ones. Other than the errors in the detail of some of the stamps is this a reliable way to pick out a fake stamping? By the way I am really enjoying this post. I love learning information like this. I.m going to take the buttplate of and see whats under there and I will email you and let you know what I find. Thanks! Michael |

Ok on to number 3. #3 is also a Fake and harder to tell since it is half sanded to hide its flaws and may be the hardest one to compare. How many can you see? Rick B ![]() ![]()

#5 is really so fake that I think if you voted this one real after I've shown many of the others then collecting can be hard and costly. Look at these cannons on this one and tell me they dont scream RUN AWAY. Rick B

I'm going to say that all are fake. I'm seeing some that are just so asymetrical that Ican't imagine them to be real, some that are obvious that the stamps were added after the wood "finishing" and some that just look cheap. I'm guessing that the stamp is supposed to go on before the finshing with...blo or whatever finsher...is used. Am I close? I guess I am one of those suckers born every minute!

All-righty then, on to #6. Yes you guess it "FAKE" also. This one was a harder one for many as you can see but when you look hard you will see many differences. This one is one I really want to hear what people find. This will tell me if you are really paying attention. Rick B ![]() ![]()

The cannon barrels look too "skinny" to me and extend beyond the ring a little too much. I'm afraid the letters look really good to me - I can't tell a difference. Like I said, I'm an easy target for a scam.
