Exclamation CAI M-1 Grand

I bought an M-1 rifle CLA 30-06. it's a C.A.I. St. Albans VT.
the operating rod comes out of the rail it rides on when firing. Who do I get a hold of to get it fixed or chew someone out?

Local gunsmith? The M1 is very common and popular, most smiffs know how to work on 'em.

Just remember, DON'T shoot commercial .30-06 hunting ammo in it, or it WILL damage the oprod! Either use surplus military M2 ball from the CMP, or buy an adjustable gas plug for the rifle. Or load your own to milspecs, usually 150 gr. FMJ bullets and 47grs. of IMR4895. Modern hunting ammo produces higher pressures than the M1 is designed to handle. Ammo from the local sporting goods store will bring grief.

Um, while a local 'smith might be able to repair your operating rod, the generally accepted "master" is Jim Swartz, whose eMail address is jswartz280@aol.com

I've not had him do any work for me -- yet -- but I've seen many positive assessments of his work, and no negative ones. (Full disclosure: I did buy a timing block from Mr. Swartz; it's precisely as advertised.)

Could be the tab on the op rod is worn out. Could be a problem with the channel it rides in. Try another op rod you know is up to spec.

CIA Garands are spotty at best.

The early ones might be ok, but for the same money you can get a USGI...
