| WTB: M1 can you guys help?
Hey guys there is a gun show here next Saturday and I have funds in hand and want to buy a M1 Garand. Problem is that there is just not that much info on the net and I don't know anything about them. You guys have helped me out in the past and I want to know what to look for besides the obvious. I want a shooter, good looking but not a closet queen. I'll be buying in person so can look for whatever I need to look for, but just don't know that much about them. Thanks, Eric

k8cca, I'd strongly recommend buying an M1 through CMP - reasonable prices (especially for a shooter) and recently, the delivery time has been very short. Check their site: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm (this section shows you available M1 rifles for sale) http://www.odcmp.com/ (this gets you to the homepage) You'll probably do a LOT better through CMP than you'll do at 99% of gunshows! Only requirements (besides the usual non-felony and American citizen-type requirements, are to belong to a CMP sponsored club - (Garand Collectors of America is one example) and shoot in a CM-sponsored match or practice match. |

if you don't mind going through all the hoops and stuff they want you to do. k8cca since you are looking for a shooter, i presume you don't give a squat about stamps, numbers, what the "rarenvaluble" collector item should be. first of all its like buying any other gun. look at general over all appearance no rust clean, wood in good shape. rack the op rod back until it locks. get your borelight (a must have) and look down the barrel real good for its general condition. now position your left hand by the open magazinewith the right ease back the op rod, with the left thumb depress the follower, no ease the op rod forward until it clears the boltcatch, remove the thumband let go the op rod, and then squeeze the trigger. pull on the trigger guard bow to see if its tight and latching. last show here M1's were running 6-800 apiece. your results may vary. |

CMP rifles are running $375-550.00 (make and model vary in price). The savings are well-worth going through the "hoops"! If you want a shooter and aren't concerned about collectability, go with the CMP. |
