| new guy
Hi my name is Jeremy, and Im new here. I have been wanting to get a Garand for a long time but haven't been able to. This past week I finaly decided that i was going to come up with the money to get one no matter what (selling another gun, maybe) or using my xmas bonus. So I went to a couple of pawn shops to see what they had. #1-nothing, #2-$1000, There is still a consignment place I want to check out but its a fairly long drive and I haven't had the time to go. I just want to know what the average going price is for a M1. Seems like I saw one a few months back for about $600 but the guy at the pawn shop said $1000 was about normal, of course he could have just been doing his job and trying to make a sale. Thanks |

Totally depends on consdition, year, correct matching barrel, etc. I would say on the retail side $600-$1200 is about right. You can gt them for $500 from CMP, but that is a tedious process and takes several months. Gunboker is a great place to look as well - most pawn shops will allow a transfer from Gunbroker for $20-$35.

Take your time and look aroundfor a Garand. For a newbie the best and safest way is CMP. You dont have to worry about getting taken or paying to much. It may seem alittle intimidating at first but is actually very simple to qualify to purchase from them. Go to thier web site and spend some time looking around. CMP Home It is well worth the wait. If you absolutly cant wait there are other options but you will pay alot more. There are some good deals out there with reasonable prices but you run the risk of getting taken without knowing what to look for. Welcome to the site |

Proof of Age--check Marsmanship Activity--check Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm--check Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization---uhhh The only problem I have with CMP is finding a CMP club to join. The ones in my area are mostly high school ROTC. There is one club that I would love to join but the cost is a lot ($125 a year) considering the time it takes me to get there, 40-45 min., since I have a free shooting range about a 2 min. drive from my front door. I would rather put that money towards the rifle or some ammo. | |

| Welcome aboard jermpool. Keep pursuing a CMP affiliated organization. What are the rules for starting one with fellow collectors? If I was looking for another M1 Garand to add to the three I have now, that is the way I would go. The CMP Garands look better than most that I see out there. JMO.

SWEET I just went down the list of clubs in my state clicking on every one that had a website and found one for $30 for a year. So if the consignment shop fails me I will definately go with the CMP. Its more of a training facility than a club but they are part of the CMP program.

Also, the Garand Collector's Association qualifies as an affiliated club and it is only 25 bucks a year.

First off Jeremy Welcome!!! Like JohnnyCat said depends....But that being said I know a gentleman who has SEVERAL descent M1 rifles for sale, and by that I mean take it out and shoot it safely and consistently. No their not pristine rack queens that were cream puffs during the WWII and Korea, but they sell between 600-800 dollars. So where do you live? If you don't want that info on the web you could PM me and I will give you his info. BTW I feel like mine is every bit worth 1,000+ everytime I pull the trigger!

| CMP currently has a multi-month backlog on orders and doesn't charge a debit or credit card until the order ships, so you could open a debit account, order right away, and start saving-kind of like layaway. That way you don't have to wait once as you save the money and again for the rifle to ship.

jeremy, welcome to the forum. CMP does have good deals and you will know exactly what you are getting. But don't count out the big wholesalers. You can buy from them and have them ship it to your local gun shop with a Class 1 FFL; or if you have a Class 03 Curio & Relics FFL, they can ship to the address on your Class 03 FFL, since Garands qualify as C&R guns. Southern Ohio Gun has Garands, and claims they're the only wholesaler that does. Here's what they have to say about them. "S.O.G. has acquired a small lot of these historic rifles in good condition from overseas, and is offering them for sale to FFL holders, while they last, at $695. There have been rumors of these type rifles being importable for some time now, but it just never happened. We were fortunate to have the Government approve this one small lot. There may never be another, as it seems the import regulations change just as the administration in Washington changes. These are from Springfield Armory originally, and ended up in an overseas arsenal where they've been for decades. These have to be excellent investment rifles!" So if you wanted to get the great price, you'd have to work out something with your local gun shop and pay a transfer fee. But it might be doable. You can talk to them about it, anyway, when you have the money in hand. |

Beware of the SOG M1s.Reports are not very flattering as to condition. If you are some months out from purchasing one the CMP should have some very nice rifles coming up after the 1st of the year. But be aware there will most likely be an increase in price on rifles and on ammunition if they get anymore surplus HXP.

Definitely go with the CMP. Sure there's a couple hoops, but you will get a nice rifle that is guaranteed to shoot, and not pay pawn shop prices of 1000-1200 bucks.

You're in Chattanooga? Jump on The Choo-Choo and go down to Anniston, and buy one in person! Jeez, that's a day-trip for you, an overnighter at the most. That way, you can pick out the one you want and take it home with you. Ordering one and then waiting for it when you live that close is just nuts.
