Pakistani (probably) Garand in Afghanistan

An Italian soldier stands near weapons surrendered by around 80 former Taliban fighters just two days after President Hamid Karzai asked his fellow countrymen to embrace the government and lay down their arms in western Herat , Afghanistan, Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009. Karzai on Thursday in his inaugural speech said he would welcome and help anyone who agreed to stop fighting and return to their homes.

Pakistan, right next door, received up to 150k Garands before 1975.

Question

I dunno about Garands in Pakistan but...
Iran got a bunch of Garands back before the place went crazy. They had a strange mix of weapons: G3's , FAL's , Uzi's ( yes , UZI's ) , Enfields -- all kinds of stuff.

If the Pakistani Army does have Garands , they might want to make some room for newer stuff , sometime.

I do know. Pakistan did receive about the same number of Garands as Iran, under the same aid program. However, the program to Pakistan ended ten years later - it's safe to say they're out of service now and it'd be a simple matter to run the serial number

The U.S. issues all types of weapons (and ally weaponry) to the Middle East (and many other countries) in AID packages for many purposes... I saw Afghanistan troops at a funeral bearing M14s in the Wall Street Journal this past week... wonder how they got those. haha

- and our WWII surplus got into the area during the Cold War. The Military Aid reports, with the package details, are in the War College's library at Carlisle Barracks.
