Well the hunt begins for parts again. I just received the Winchester on the right. The neat thing is the 7th round modification was never done to it. There is a possibility that the early ones for instance the first couple hundred were made like this and all put in a bin. At a later date this one was dragged out and stamped with a later number. Just a theory but it sounds like a good one. Remember Winchester started at 100000 making these two # 434 and # 1660. I have gotten teh Winny bug and scared it will never go away hehehe. Thought some may enjoy this as I have only seen two Winchester's with no 7th round modification and this being one of them. Also they were known for a light stamp early on with the outside being deeper and middle area very lightly struck. Rick B

Any other Winchester parts or just the receiver? Might be an expensive addiction! Winchester parts are pretty dear these days.

Just the receiver Rick. I have some of the parts on hand and have completed the Educational order next to it. Money is harder than finding the parts hahaha. I have faith in getting it up to par and also work for parts hehehehe. Heck I'm a gluten for punishment as I am working on 9989 still. That's harder to complete than any Winchester since the gas cylinder and barrel are pretty much non existent. Rick

The 7th round modification was normally on the Springfield's and really not known to be on Winchester's. They thought the indent as seen in the second photo above compared to the first one below that is built up later at rebuild was a cause for the Garand to stop after firing 6 or 7 rounds. The drilling process for the barrel threads was how this indented guide ribs were done. Later they either modified the end of the bit or didn't drill as far in leaving the ribs squared at top and not angled or slopped. If you look at the photos below you will see the built up guide ribs and above there slopped. If you have a later Garand you will see the ribs were not touched. Let me know if there are any other questions as this is why the forum is here. Thanks,,Rick B

Nice Winchester, Rick! I may need to get my hands on one some day. Can't wait for warmer weather so I can go shooting with my dad.
