My British special, straight-pull bolt-action rifle (no gas operating system).

Rifle is basically a Fulton Peerless, with match rear sights, stainless barrel, target foresight, Leupold Mk4 4-14x40 on ARMS QD mounts, Fulton scope mount and now a Harris bipod.

This rifle holds it's own against many out & out Target rifles, though I wouldn't like to carry it for stalking deer.

Can anyone recommend a good, composite stock (pistol grip or not) to replace my old wood with?

Consider USGI synthetic.

What I am trying to avoid is swelling in the wood due to weather conditions affecting the accuracy. I have just mounted a Zeiss 4.5 - 14 x 50 on a three point mount. This is my M14 pre mount/scope:

I always have reservations when I hear about these wonderful shots taken at over 100 yards with a .22lr. I know I'm going to stir up a hornet's nest but I reckon maybe a lot of folk get mixed up between Feet & yards, or maybe between paces & yards. I have also seen a guy "pace out" 100 yards and when measured it was just under 84 yards?? (48ft. short!)

Aye, but mine is not a "gas" gun. It is a British Spec, straight-pull bolt action.

A tight fitting USGI synthetic stock will serve you well, you may want to stiffen the fore grip if you sling it up tight.

LAW483 can advise you on stiffening the fore end.

I finally figured out that internet yards/meters are much shorter than standard yards/meters
I like the one about shooting clays at 300yds with a 22lr.
That's the holy Grail of all .22's.
With open irons I can do good at 200yds, hit paper at 400 yds, at 600yds...your kidding me, it needs to be a large target or I can't even see the damn thing.

Are we at cross purposes here? most basic (competitive)full bore target shooting takes place(in Britain, anyway) from 300-600 metres(yards), using open sights.
The oldest trophy in my club dates from 1904 and was for 10rds + 2ss at 300 & 400 yards with 7rds + 2ss at 500 & 600 yards, (service rifle).
1000 & 1200 yards competitions are run with modern target rifles using only iron sights.

Not at all. I should explain that being a cheap sob, I print my own targets. A 8X11 inch piece of paper makes a small target at 600yds.
I have shot in service matches out to 600yds, even tried some 1000yds at one range last summer. IMHO, shooting past 600yds is an acquired skill, one that I have not mastered and don't shoot enough to ever master.

So in the service matches out to 600 yards, nobody hit the bull???
My first full bore target rifle was a P14 in .303 and I could sometimes hit the bull at 600 with that using surplus ammo.

600 yards is not that far.

In Golf 600 yards is a par 5 for the masses and a par 4 for Tiger Woods

I have only had it for a couple of days so Rex Kramer might have to answer this correctly, but i think its lighter then the wooden m-14s i have shot or held.

The MCS is holding a bone stock side stamped Poly Tech M14.
It has a 22" standard profile, chrome lined barrel, a forged 1-piece
op rod, a forged receiver and a standard military 2-stage trigger.
knightRider plans to send his new M14 to Smith Enterprise, Inc.
for domestication and modernization - I just hope he shoots it
a bit before he upgrades it.

I will have to look at my notes to see what it weighs.
It's not light, but it weighs less than a standard M1A bedded in a MacMillan.
