AR-10 vs M1A

Why would you own one or the other?

Because I can!

No honestly, I have a M1A/M14 and a long time ago I used to have an original AR10 which was an excellent rifle (& could fire 22mm rifle grenades). In service grade they are both very accurate. I don't know just how good the modern AR10's are but maybe one day I will find out.

I like both platforms. I have two AR's and an M1A, looking for a AR-10 in .308. I think the M1A can do anything the AR-10 can do, but is heavier and longer.

I owned a real nice AR-10A4 SPR plus a carbine upper and sold it off to fund another M14.

my friends i own both, all i can say is - potatoe or patotoe. both are extremely accurate and reliable. i tell you what, everyones got a gun they would grab first in shtf. mine would be the ar10. why not the ole m1? only more round capability. if your gonna go with the ar10 i would take a look at good ole dpms. i dont know much about the armalite ar10s but take a look at them gents too.

Food for thought ~

As posted by Different:
Apparently, the U. S. Army is still interested in evaluating a precision 7.62 mm NATO platform.
The M110 was fielded last year but it seems some further review of the matter is being conducted.
The M110 shot MOA at 1000 yards at Fort Benning. The feedback from troops in the sandbox is that
the M110 isn't always consistent and the sand over there affects its operation.
The SEI demonstration M21A5/C-IED was tested on 03/28/08. Using M118LR ammunition at 100 yards,
the SEI demonstration M21A5/C-IED printed a 3/4 " five shot group. At 1000 yards, the shot group was
less than 10 " using M118LR ammunition.
The M110 is the Army version of the SR-25. The Mk 11 is the Navy version of the SR-25.

Posted on Lightfighter:
Quoted from a (UUNS) "Urgent Universal Need Statement" that was released about the middle of last year.
"The MK-11 Mod 1 semi-automatic 7.62mm rifle has proven to be plagued with a variety of problems, and fails to satisfy the requirement for a semi-automatic 7.62mm sniper rifle. The MK11 Mod 1 has demonstrated catastrophic failures in reliability and accuracy, leading to a potential safety hazard for snipers employing them in combat zones. Many snipers fully understand the necessity of the semi-auto 7.62mm rifle and have overstated the true capabilities of the MK 11 Mod 1 rifle due to fear of not receiving any semi-automatic 7.62mm rifle in the future."

It appears that there are issues with the military version of the AR-10 that are not present with the modernized M14.

10 vs 14

I have owned 7 M1As, currently down to one. I own three AR 10s.
None of the M1As had any malfunctions. Ever.
My AR 10 carbine had one failure to eject.
Ammo has been factory, hand loads and surplus.
Full length rifle is the most accurate gas gun I have ever seen.
Usually leave the house with the AR 10 carbine.
The M1A dosen't see much use. It is my first one, its all GI and it sits in a nearly presentation grade walnut stock. Its now mostly for looking at.

I still prefer steel and wood but the AR 10s are lots of fun also.
These are all Armalite.
