New (to me) M1A SA w/ TRW parts

Bought this the first weekend this October. An SA receiver with TRW barrel, bolt, trigger group, oprod and maybe gas cylinder all in a custom painted fibergalss stock that needs bedding. Previous owner said 284 rounds went down barrel. Now 30 more. Didnt have normal big targets when shot it first time. Think is sighted in for 200 yards. FNM ammo all over the place. Will see what happens with better ammo

How do you identify maker on gas cylinder?

That's about as good as an M1A can get!

Does the receiver have 7.62mm stamped on the heel?

Looks like a neat pick up there. I wouldn't mind shooting an M14 myself. Never had the pleasure. Saw a couple at the gun show today, as well as a Johnson rifle that looked to be in pretty good shape for the reenactor stuff that was around at the gun show today. I picked me up a 1903 Springfield and have it posted in the right forum. Nice gun let us know how it shoots with better ammo.

The ol boy I got it from said it cost him about $250 for the paint job. Firgured why would a guy invest that much in a rifle that didn't shoot well.
Looking to find some "match grade" loading data for 150, 168 and 175 grain bullets.
Yeah, the paint job adds a "cool factor" of 9.

Well the "standard" load for the M1A with a 168gn Sierra MK is 41.5 gns of 4895, WW primer, LC case, OAL of 2.800" which should give around 2550 fps.

Good starting point, it works well in my M1A. as does 155gn RG L42A1 ammo and MEN/DAG 7.62nato.

If it's been removed from the package you can't. I would not waste my money bedding a gi glass stock. Unitize the gas cylinder and ream the FS. Buy a Sadlak spring guide and a Wolf spring, a spare gi extractor, maybe upgrade the sights to NM.

$250 for the paint job......WOW. This one cost me $10.

This rifle is very similar to yours, TRW bolt, op-rod, trigger group and a HR barrel. I've added NM sights and unitized the gas cylinder, added some Sadlak parts.

Watch the classifieds at m14firingline.com or Gunbroker and you can find one of these parts rolls.

Fill it with all the small parts for the trigger, bolt and other GI spares.
Don't leave home without it.

Check out Sadlak.com for the best parts you can buy for the M1A platform.

FMJ, check out M-14 Firing Line Public Forum - Powered by vBulletin read all the stickies on DIY accuracy improvements. You should expect 3moa from that rifle. Not a bad price with todays market. I paid 1500 for my gi rifle two years ago.

I see I'm not welcome there, I just clicked your link and my IP address is permanently banned without ever having visited the site before. Must be one for the Guiness book of records! They must have some close ties with M14 firing line.
