| Retired Moderator | Extended barrel front sites
Long slides on 1911s can be dang expensive, and the longest, by AMT, are not the most reliable. So I was thinking, how about using an extended barrel, a standard slide, and some attachment that blends with the slide and has the front site mounted on it. Kind of like some of the extended and ported barrels out there, but this would go to the end of a 7" barrel and have a front site. I know I've seen such things on a Hi-Power.

i use a standard 5" slide but i have a 6" bbl from FAC. its ported and puts out one hole groups at the indoor 50 foot range. its set up for bulls eye shooting we shoot at 50 feet indoors and that bbl is a real sweety.

just for conversation ill give my 2 cents on this. what youve seen is the FN hipower gp comp. what you want to do needs a little adjustment to the idea - a 1911 barrel does not have enough thickness to mill in a dovetail for a front sight, to get around that you would want to use a longer threaded barrel for a compensator, then add a compensator that has enough steel in front of the forward port to machine in a sight dovetail. or just cheat and get a caspian 6" slide!

I was thinking get a 7" slide and instead of milling the barrel, just press fit and solder a block with the contours of the slide onto the extended part of the barrel. No machining needed for the barrel.

if your thinking about a 7" slide, why in the world would you need a barrel that is extended beyond that. i understand the longer sight radius your looking for, but there are practical limits to the usefullness of what you are seeking.

? I've got to study on this one BR? Why do you want such a long barrel anyway? Do you plan on range shooting at 100 yds with your handgun or is this for concealed carry-personal protection?

Sorry, that was a typo... I meant 7" barrel with standard slide, and the last two inches covered by the site block/slide extension.
