Well a Desert Eagle is lighter then a rifle, and weight depends on your strength.I don't have a problem with the weight or the grip, though I do understand one's preference for revolvers.

Stay away from target tolerances

Just about any of the major gun companies make a quality .45. If you are heading into Alaska stay away from .45's with target tolerances as you want dependability. The army .45's of WW2 fame were nicknamed "rattlers" as you could hold the grip and hear a rattle as you shook the gun. This was to make certain it functioned even in combat with exposure to sand, dust, freezing water, etc.

If you want to carry a 1911 style with more punch, try a Colt Delta elite in 10mm or a Coonan .357 auto. That would be minimum I would carry for bear country.

Well, if you're going to be in bear country and want to carry a 1911 platform, I'd opt for a Dan Wesson in 10mm (not sure if they make a blued gun, but the stainless would be a good choice for your applications); it's brighter finish would only be seen once it leaves the leather, so shouldn't be a real problem. and, you can always get it refinished in a matte or Black Teflon finish down the line...

BTW, Double-Tap Ammunition makes a good 220gr hard cast with a large meplat in 10mm that would get you the penetration needed on those large-bodied bears should that horror story arise and you're without a rifle...good luck

If a 1911 is what you want to carry then buy it but you would be better off with a revolver and the Ruger "NEW" Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull or 44 mag. would be a better choice.
Next you have the ''NEW'' Ruger Redhawk KRH-444 in 44 mag these and other Ruger models would serv you better.
You should also take a look at what Taurus has to offer such as there Model 444 line of 44 mags. These are lite weight and have a grip thats enhanced to control recoil.
Then theres the Tracker series to choose from and then the Raging Bull models.

If I were venturing in Bear country I would be armed with the right tool to keep from becomeing a Bears next meal and you need to be too...A.H

I'm puzzled, guys. If polar bears and grizzlies are immune to modern .45 ACP, how the heck did anyone ever kill one in the 1800's?

Polar bears I don't know about. But in Old California, the Californios used to go after grizzles on horseback with lances. For fun. I guess they didn't have video games...

I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II 3 inch. Its my CCW. 7+1. You can get it with an ambidex. safety if you want. I have never been dissapointed in shooting a kimber. Ive heard negative comments about kimber customer service myself but I have never had to go to them with any problems yet either.

My anti-bear caliber of choice would be a .44Mag. minimum, and maybe even more, like .5AE, or even a .500SW.

id still be worried with my .454casull.

the recoil from mine is so harsh a quick follow up shot might not be in the cards.

Ruger 44, or 460 or is it a 480 something like that. Or better yet 454 casul because you can shoot 45 colt in it too. I never shot a bear but I would want plenty of gun to do it with. I think a 4" redhawk would be perfect with the right magnum shells.
