Yep, the only 'fatal flaw' here is in the shooter's technique. Then again, jumping around hollering with his finger broken might make him harder to hit by the opposition.....

Seems to me that if someone wanted to use this method they would need to have a firearm specifically designed to be held in that manner. Attachment of gadgets to allow laying your index finger along the frame parallel to the barrel just looks totally unwieldy.

I was curious about one thing: the article implies that the method may have been used in the pre-1900 era which begs the question about whether someone tried it with a revolver. On this basis I tried gripping every revolver I have from a Colt Detective Special to a Ruger Super Blackhawk and I rapidly concluded that a shooter would probably only do this once as the tip and maybe even the first knucle of the index finger would be likely to disappear from the cylinder blast!

By a weird coincidence, I've seen a picture of someone firing a Colt Detective Special in just this fashion. I'll bet you have to.

Jack Ruby used his revolver that way when shooting Lee Oswald. I have read that it was a not unknown technique at the time, and allegedly favored by hoods (and wannabees).

That said, I think it's a silly technique. I've tried it. It doesn't work near as well as a normal grip. The reference to the Army teaching this technique I think is a mistake. At one time the Army started their combat pistol training by having the young gentlemen first point at the target with the index finger. Then they'd point at the target with the .45 in their hands, the index finger pointed straight forward alongside the trigger guard. This was to create a sense memory relationship between the pointed finger and the barrel. Then they would point with the finger on the trigger. Not a bad training plan.

Is my M&P flawed because I can't fire it with my feet?? I need 2 know that way I can point with all my fingers, oh and my thumbs will comply oh yes they wil,please any one.

I mean, everyone is entitled to train with the tactics and information they believe in and have the most confidence in, of course, but I seriously doubt that most people are -ever- gonna point with their index finger and pull the trigger with their middle finger....!

I have a nickel plated WWI era Menta that has the nickel worn off the right side of the slide. Took me a while to figure it out but if you put your middle finger on the trigger and the index finger on the slide it matches up perfectly.
I know I don't want to shoot anything holding it like that.

My grandpa shoots with his middle finger!!! Granted his index finger was cut off on a cider mill when he was a kid.
