My new makarov

My Dad has owned two makarov's for many years. He just gave me one of his
Makarov's yesterday, it was practically unfired. We also ordered some pearce grips, because his original makarov was the one that had the rubber grips. My quesiton to you is what kind of ammo do you get the best results with. And, is it pretty easy to clean if firing corrosive ammo? Also, would you guys reccomend snap caps to practice trigger squeeze with? Thank you.

Congratulations on your makarov. I use mostly wolf and LVE. These guns like whatever you feed them. Not too much corrosive ammo around anymore unless it is decades old. If it is corrosive it's no problem. Just clean your makarov in HOT water (mix in 1/10 part ammonia if you wish) then dry it off with hair dryer and brush bore out with normal gun cleaner, oil and you're good to go. The corrosive ammo has salts in the primer and hot water is the key.

Thanks for your help Makarovnik. Also, will snap caps protect you firing pin 100% of the time? trigger squeeze is a great thing to practice for me

I also have another question...

Where is a good place to get inexpensive makarov magazines?

Maybe i can get pics up within a couople of days after he gets back from cincinatti. my brother has my digital camera also

I have had Makarovs for over 10 years. I have Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian and East German Makarovs. Overall, I have found that 95 gr FMJ produces the most reliable results.

Some JHP will jam in some Maks.
Wolf had a feed problem in my EGs, and a lot of fail-to-fires.

The LVE factory in Novasibirsk produces the best Russian ammo, with Barnaul a close second. These are now sold under the Silver Bear brand and are advertised variously as 92 gr and 94 gr.

IMHO, if you want consistent results, skip the 115 gr and the Wolf. They are more trouble than they are worth. However, if you insist on shooting the heavier bullets, then get a 21# recoil spring from Wolff Gunsprings.

Various dealers on the net have 9x18 on hand lately.

I would recommend going to the range and using live ammo to practice trigger pull.

I would too, but something to be able to practice while your in the house and arent able to go shooting would be great

Snap caps are fine but not necessarily needed with the Makarov, a spent casing should work fine as the firing pin has no spring. I've dry fired my Makarovs and have never had a problem...never heard of a firing pin failure with a Makarov either...

Do they make Crimson Trace laser grips for the MAK? i like them on the Glock and 1911 a lot! The 1911 has the best feel because it is a button on the side that 'ignites' the laser.
