| Can anybody tell about the Camp Carbine?
My father is giving my one in .45ACP when I see him next. Did they come in a variety calibers? They operate off of 1911 mags right? What caused them to discontinue?

hey one, they came in 9mm also, i wanted one real bad back in the day but was thwarted by a gunstore guy that said they were too junky for him to sell. i think now that this may have been his way of saying that he could make more money off other guns but i never did buy it. good shooting-rich |

I HAD the 45acp carbine back in 1984ish...I used it for plinking...I belive they do use the 1911 mags. My stock cracked at the wrist?? the point were the stock narrowed down to the reciever..I belive that that was a comon problem....the few I have seen for sale since have been at a pretty high price...so that have to have something going for them. I do not rember any real problems....I read somewere (do not know if its true) that out of a long barrel carbine the 45acp bullet actuly travels SLOWER than out of a pistol.

My understanding is that Marlin stopped making both camp carbines during Clinton's term, due to the "assault rifle" scare, although neither gun was on the banned list. I see more of the 9mm than the .45's and think 9mm was more common. And yes, the .45's are getting pricey, $300+ asking price at gunshows here in New England. The .45 ACP round does not gain a lot of velocity when used in an 18 inch barrel. Some 230 gr. loads won't go supersonic. However, the 18 inch barrel does give more velocity than a 5 inch pistol barrel - just not a whole lot more. The ideal length for .45 ACP was probably close to the old Thompson SMG barrel length of 11.5 inches. I've shot and handled several camp guns and find them to be a slick little carbine - not great on accuracy (trigger's too heavy) but a neat gun overall. Feed and function were excellent. They are a good gun for what they were intended to do. The .45 takes a 1911 magazine and the 9mm uses one of the S&W mags, I believe. |
