I was once told by a very reputable dealer to only shoot copper washed/jacketed bullets through Marlins because of the Micro-Groove rifling. Any of you think that is the truth? Remember: I was TOLD THIS. It's NOT my idea.

I've never seen any trouble with lubed lead bullets in Micro-groove. The only thing I have experienced is that the lead bullets tend to jam more in semiautos - the plated bullets (no .22LR is 'jacketed') work more smoothly there.
The cowboy shooters seem to use the old "lead in Ballard rifle, jacketed in Micro-groove" thing from what I've seen.

You made me go and buy it. Started at 100, the guy gave me 20 off for "forgetting" to ask if I wanted the protection plan, I had a coupon for 20 off, and this bumped my credit card points up to get another $25 store credit.

So $35 for a 76 glenfield marlin 60. It jammed quite a bit though. The brass would eject but the next round wouldn't feed at all and the bolt would close empty (pre-hold-open) or the round would get stuck halfway. I was using American Eagles which I had and my model 25 had no problem with. Later opened it up and it was really dirty and dry so either the cheap ammo or the dirty gun.

Tried out the scope on my 25, shot groups at fifty yards averaging vertically half an inch and as little as half the bullet hole size in one group. Horizontally about 1 3/4 inch to 2. My cheap sight vice wobbles side to side. I know I could get it down to a full mag fitting under a half dollar if I had a more stable rest. Trigger could stand to be lightened too. It's the worst pull of any gun I've fired.

Here's a target with my 25 scoped at 50 yards. The verticals are tight, especially in numbers 3 and 4, but the horizontals are bad between the wind and the wobbly vice.

I generally find horizontal stringing to be either me jerking the trigger, or not concentrating on my breathing/heartbeat - it DOES matter!

Breath out slowly, pull trigger smoothly, try to shoot on the same 'beat' each shot - you can see through the scope the tiny movement from right to left, right to left.
Get the timing right, and you'll cut your horizontal grouping by half.
Vertical stringing could be a loose action screw or barrel harmonics - I find a small bit of cardstock or thin cork under the barrel in the very front of the stock's barrel channel can help.

I just tried my 25 again at a range this time with real targets and a good sand bag type rest. It was really windy when I got there, and actually started raining really bad really fast so I had to cut it short, or I would've done more and probably gotten better scores. Mini-mag solid ammo.

50 yard smallbore nra target, a full mag of seven all in the 9 or higher, with five touching or in the ten ring, 3 of those in or touching the bullseye. *Digging for a quarter* Nice, six of 'em completely under it. One off an inch below the rest of the group.

100 yard target, 4 tens, a 9, 8, 7. They kinda trailed off in the direction of the wind, all within the ten vertically, but off horizontally.

The distance dial on my BSA sweet 22 scope worked perfectly. The gun performed really well, but something's gotta be done about the trigger pull. Too broke to deal with it now though.

Thumbs up

On that trigger pull, if you are decently mechanically inclined, smoothing it is easy. The Model 25 (at least the old one I have) has a simple pin for the trigger and sear. Later Marlin bolt rifles use a screw. Remove them and give them a light burnishing with the finest emory cloth you can find. You don't want to remove hardly any metal or alter the engagement angles, just polish it and remove burrs. Secondly, the ol' "Pentel Spring Trick"....
Replace the stiff trigger spring with a softer spring from a mechanical pencil or pen. You may need to try a few to find the one that fits best.

This is the best that can be done, short of buying the $80 RifleBasix trigger.

any1 out there had problems with magazine placement and feeding? as the bolt strips off a fresh round it scrapes the round under it and shears off a substantial portion of lead. ive put a washer in between the mag catch and receiver to lower it some but hasnt helped much because the mag doesnt make contact with the receiver in the rear and it tilts the front up could just be my magazine though its my 1st #25 and havent been able to find any with the catch on the mag other than machining a plate to properly position the mag im out of ideas any help appreciated

New here

I'm new to here, thought I'd say Hi. I have a Marlin 25 MN that I traded straight up for a model 25. I just very recently bought a 883 SS. I think I got it last week. My roommate and I took "the boys" out for a little romp today. I shoot the CCI maxi mag hp 30 gr out of the 883 and CCI 40 gr out of the MN. Both are sighted in at 100 yds. After checking the zero at 100, I shot a big Green Tea can 3 out of 5 times at 200 yds. I hit it once out of 2 times with the MN. Then I stumbled upon this site. So I did the pen spring trick on both and smoothed the metal on the MN. Now I'm dying to get back out there. Looking forward to learning more in these forums. Next trick will be to adjust the trigger on my single shot Ultra Slug Hunter. Here's a pic of "the boys".

I just got my grandpa's marlin model 25N and I want to do some work on it. The trigger pulls harder than any of my other guns. I want to work on it but am nervous about tampering with the trigger. Please help by giving step by step instructions on how to test trigger pull weight and smoothing out the trigger pull.

Once you get it honed in just right...you'll be hitting all kindsa things

My 25MN is freakishly accurate...I LOVE IT!!

Once you get it scoped & bipod'ed you'll really fall in love

Today's fun with my 25 MN

I had to re-attach my scope to my beloved Marlin 25 MN. This little rifle is accurate once it's sighted in. I started off today on a 75 yd. range missing a a target completely. The fellow firing next to me gave me 3' x 3' sheet of kraft paper. After 50 rounds, I had the rifle sighted in. During the proceedings, my neighbor commented on how loud my rifle was. He was firing a Ruger .22 semi-automatic, and I don't think he had ever seen or heard a .22 WMR go off. This rifle puts a slug through a 3" pine block and it blows the heads off squirrels. More, I cannot tell you except my scope is a Bushnell 4 x 30. I fired Expert with my M-1 Garand during Trainfire at Fort Dix. This rifle is clearly not a match for the M-1 in terms of sheer mass and durability, but for the money it was a very good buy some years ago. I have not shot any of the deer in the back yard with the Marlin, but a well placed round would put one down.

Picked up a #25 about a month ago, real nice little shooter. I enjoy shooting it more than the new 60 I bought 5 mos ago.

Last night I did the trigger spring mod and some polishing, can't wait to get out to b-i-l's farm. Also I put a Simmons 22Mag 3-9X32 scope on it and for an inexpensive scope its just the ticket. Now I need to get better mounts and a bi-pod and I'll be set until I buy another old Marlin. Maybe a nice 881.
