17 hmr

bought son a 17 any thoughts on sighting in have sighted in to 100 and only hitting a 4 in square not hitting shots side by side shots are 1-2 in apart shooting off sand bags. 20 gr bullet hornady. heard these guns will drive tacks .

Hm. Not sure. My Savage is indeed a tack driver. Maybe change up the ammo a little. Also, check your glass. Never know what the deal could be.

Try some 17grain V-max type bullets. Make sure your actions screws are tight, but not too tight.

Make sure the scope is not canted when shooting, and the rings are tight and everything.

Mine shot a penny sized group within the first 40 rounds. This is with 17grain ammo. At any rate, keep working with it. It should come around.

What type of rifle is it???

Have to agree with marlin. the rate of twist is set for the 17gr. bullet. I have 3 17hmrs 2 in rifles and one in a pistol. and thought the 20gr would be a bit better for squirells but nope. couldn't get them to group. Same with a 17m2.
