I have a great old Westernfield 30-30...Model 740A. I bought it for $80 bucks about 20 years ago, and didn't realize how good the action was until i got it home and cleaned it up! Now, it is the best shooting Marlin that I have. I currently own a Model 1895 Guide Gun (45/70), an 1895 Cowboy (45/70) and the old Westernfield 336. It probably has more rounds through it than all of my other guns combined, and still shoots great. Man, I love that gun |

In 1977 my friend bought me a used Marlin Model 336 Serial number 20257 for my birthday. I had never used a Marlin and didn't like lever guns (Winchesters) until I used the Marlin. I loved it.
Several years later I had the numbers checked on my weapons in New Hampshire. It turned out the Marlin had been stolen in Pennsylvania. I had to provide the police with the name of the dealer where my friend bought the gun. The police kept the Marlin and sold it at auction to benifit the state. It pissed me off that they wouldn't return it to the rightful owner.

I have owned three Marlin lever guns. Love them. Two are Glenfield/marlin 30As scoped and wonderful rifles. The other was a 336 in 35 rem. Let a kid talk me out of the 35. Caught me at a weak moment. He loves the rifle and is very proud of it so I dont' feel bad. Love the quick light short handling of the rifle.

Hard story to believe, but when I took my Marlin 30-30 out the first time to sight her in, I did not get that pleasure. It was already sighted in!! Frreaked me out, considering this was a new out of the box, never owned before me rifle. How accurate was it? I kill Jack rabbits at 80 yards with open sights, no need to ruin the guns curves with a scope.. Got to love a gun that treats you right, yep she is my baby, never to leave my hands. I do mean that in a stalker kind of way.

My 336T looks just like it did when it came off the dealer's rack 50 years ago. I can't begin to tell you the game it's taken over the years......and she's still perkin' along.

Have several 1893's, 1936's and premicrogroove 336's...
use one 1948 issue for the short story... http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=68752
Sixty seconds, six shots, six Texas pigs... crushed in their tracks at up to 80+ yards .
It is a cast bullet shooter that simply can't miss.
Unless you're shooting something a larger than elk, or LONG way away, you need not "graduate" to anything more.... pls1911@yahoo.com

Used properly, it adds stability in any shooting position.
I'd say put a sling on it. You won't regret it.

My 336 huntin' story...
I was stationed in Kodiak, AK when my oldest daughter turned 15, so I bought her a spankin' new 336C with a 3-9x32 scope. She loved it, and we started working up some handloads for her to shoot. After concocting numerous loads and with many trips to the range, we settled on a stout load using a 168gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertip that shot well in her gun (1" groups at 100 yds from a bench) that she would load singly due to the pointed tip.
We were out hunting one day and she spotted a forked Blacktail at what looked to be a little over 100 yards out. She was confident she could take him, so I said go for it. (I was backing her up with my .270 since she only had one round chambered.) She took aim and fired, but as this was her first deer and she was nervous, she missed. The bullet struck a tree stump right in front of the buck, peppering him with shards of wood. Through my scope I could see his chest muscles ripple as the splinters hit, but he didn't run- he just stood there looking at us. (Sitka blacktails aren't the brightest creature on the planet, lol.)
Anyway, I walked 20 feet over to her and gave her a second round. She chambered it, and taking her time she took aim again. She did it right this time, and when she pulled the trigger the Silvertip hit him just behind the point on the shoulder. He spun around (because he had to) and dropped like a sack of potatoes, and never moved again.
I thought she did pretty good- it was a measured 130 yard shot, and she put the bullet precisely where it needed to be. The gun did its job, the Silvertip performed perfectly, and we had fresh tenderloin that evening. I'll never forget her excitement and laughter as she recounted the story to our family and friends again and again over the campfire that night.
That was 9 years ago but she still has her 336, and whenever it comes out for a hunting trip she always tells that story. What a great time we had! |

My interest in all guns has always been keen and since my eye sight ain't what it used to be, I am in the process of scoping and slinging all of my lever guns. What a nice project it has turned out to be. I have several Marlins, 45/70 oct.barrel, 35Rem, 30/30, and 45Colt and then along comes leverevolution. I haven't gotten to the shooting part yet but I am encouraged by what I read on LR. Hornady is a good outfit anyway, now they have LR. Most deer that I shoot are less than 100 yds. but LR gives me new possibilities. The 45/70 and 45 Colt have especially slick actions and you can load up the 45 Colt if you like. The 45/70 doesn't need any extra charge, lol, it will get your attention. "It'll knock a chaw of backer outter your mouth", as my grandpaw used to say. What can I say, Marlins are really nice. My favorite lever gun though is an old take down 99/250 Savage my dad left me. 1 inch groups with an old 4 power Simmons Scope that has neve lost its zero. It is phenomenal. I once shot two deer, one a walking the second a running, one shot a piece. The gun doesn't miss. My fall project is filled with hope, "the kind of hope that I can believe in" , to paraphrase a well known socialist. It's a draw for an Az elk hunt. We are shooting for a gun or muzzleloader hunt. My nephew will be our guide if we make the draw. I'll use a 7mm Rem Mag or 50 cal. Omega if we are lucky. Y'all say a prayer out there for us, you hear...we are going to need all the help that we can get!

My favorite rifle to shoot is my Marlin 30 30,
A guy at a gun show was walking around with it.
It had a broken stock, and it would not cock.
I got it for $100.
It would not cock because a wooden splinter
was crammed into the linkage.
The stock looked so bad after I glued it back
together that I just painted it black.
The scope is for my sons. I like to use the iron
sights.
I love this old rifle.
Happy Shootin,
Tabdog

I just discovered something about ye olde .30-30
I was working the lever to see a few things, and discovered that if you move the lever down about an inch, and STOP, then try to go back up...it'll lock up the lever in place.
To release the lever, you must simply thumb-cock the hammer, take a key/pencil/etc and press the firing pin.
Make sure ya do that when it's UNLOADED

I did that with my HiPoint 9 carbine and after about 3 months decided to take the Red Dot scope off of it because it was more accurate without the scope. The Red Dot would stay trued in on it for some reason.
My husband has been trying to talk me into refinishing the stock due to some water damage around the butt pad but so far I've left it stock. I would like to add sling mounts to it, though. Once again, I'm torn between having the convenience of a sling and not drilling holes in the stock. Any ideas?
BTW mine is pre-warning, pre-safety. |
Hey RedHead,
I keep the stocks in the condition, I buy them in.
It gives each one, it's own personality.
As for not wanting to drill holes.
I can relate, very much.
And a simple and another inexpensive route. ($22.47)
Is a Voodoo Tactical shotgun/rifle shoulder scabbard.
I just ordered a couple more, threw Sportsman Guide. (Item # AXR-144035C)
They work great, for lever guns. (w/o scopes)
Finally,
Tell the old man, this is YOUR gun!
And back off! LOL
